  • Hi, I was looking for some advice. I purchased a new Sony TV set in December 2006 from Sainsbury's supermarket. The TV has been working OK until last week when the picture went. I took the TV to the local Sony repair centre and they have since advised that the TV needs a completely new screen. The new screen is going to cost £350 alone, so the whole repair is going to cost between £400 and £500, which is more than the TV is worth.

My point is surely a modern Sony TV should last more than 19 months and that Sony or Sainsbusy's should be looking to help me out? There was only a 1 year guarentee ont he TV, which has obviously expired now. I have contacted both SOny and Sainsbury's and they are both not interested in helping me.

Any advise would be gratefully appreciated

Bagless hoovers are really just a con. There are two sorts of hoover:
    1. Dyson cyclone type where the cylcone extracts the dirt. Patented and only from Dyson AFAIK.
    2. Bag/filter types. These filter the dirt out. Either through the bag, which you throw away after 1 or more uses (it clogs up with use). Or through a filter which you have to clean. Engineering wise the bag option is the better as you have more surface area and you can throw the bag away when it gets clogged. But bag hoovers don't look like Dysons' hence the rise of the bagless cleaner.

BTW I know that Dysons do have a secondary filter. It is secondary and you only wash it every 6mths (or never if you didn't read the instructions).

You can get other cyclonic cleaners and although I have a Dyson upright, I also have a small light-weight Typhoon which I got for £30 via Kaleidoscope - for places like stairs etc (because of arthritis I can't manage the Dyson). Anyway I know they also do an upright and it looks pretty strongly made. Last time I looked it was about £45 and if it works anywhere near as well as a Dyson it would be a good buy.

If anyone has one - they might like to comment?;)

I've had a couple of Hoover vacuums - none of which lasted very long and it was always problems with them not picking stuff up. I had a bagless one and stripped it down myself to find the bellows absolutely clogged solid! It was a recurring problem, I suspect a design fault - but I was glad to see the back of it:eek:.

  • My wife bought me a virgin balloon flight voucher at a cost of £125 for Christmas 2005. I booked my flight a couple of times in 2006 only to have it cancelled on each occasion by Virgin due to bad weather. Unfortunately, I forgot all about it in 2007 and didn't call them until recently. They said my voucher had now expired and was worthless. They said all this is covered in the T&Cs that they sent with the ticket. The T&Cs do say that you must take your flight within 12 months or within 12 months of any agreed extended commencement date which is at their discretion, otherwise you lose your right to take the flight. I tried asking for my money back but they said this was not possible,
I believe that this type of contract is unfair to the consumer. Virgin should not be allowed to pocket the cash when they have not completed delivery of the goods. Can any consumer champions out there offer me any hope?

I've come across this before. If the T&Cs are clear then they would apply to your booking. I suggest a personal letter to Richard Branson may produce a better response for you.

  • Hi,

My Toshiba LCD Tv has just developed a fault (highly noticable line in the middle of the screen) and was bought in June 2007.

As this is just over a year old and out of the standard 1 year warranty can anyone offer advice as to how best to get it sorted?
Would Curry's or Toshiba be the best bet and what should I ask for?

As the Sale of Goods Act states it should last "a reasonable amount of time", how can I find out if LCD Tv's should last longer than 15 months?

    Any help would be great.

Warranties/guarantees are in addition to Statutory Rights, in this case Sale of Goods Act, (SoGA), and as such you can ignore the warranty, from Which; -
"You have six years to make a claim for faulty goods in England, Wales and Northern Ireland; in Scotland you have five years."

If you bought the tv from Currys then that is who your claim is against, you have no contract with Toshiba, from the same link above; -

    "Retailer or manufacturer
In most cases, your rights are against the retailer – the company that sold you the product – not the manufacturer, and so you must take any claim against the retailer. However, if you have bought something on hire purchase (HP), it is the HP company that is responsible."

You can also claim against the Credit Card company or finance company if that is how you purchased it, providing the tv was over £100.

From that same link top right TOP TIPS; -
    Top tips
    • Your claim is against the retailer who sold you a faulty item, not the manufacturer.
    • If you want to reject something and get your money back, you must act quickly – normally within a few weeks.
    • If you paid by credit card, you may be able to enforce your Sale of Goods Act rights against your credit card company as well as the retailer.

  • Thanks derrick,

so what would be the best way to approach it with Curry's?
take the Tv along to show them?
ask for a repair or replacement?
    if so on what grounds

sorry if I'm asking numpty questions, but I want to get a strategy in place before I go in, and it seems that every shop you go into these days they don't know consumer rights!
  • Can I just check that the above answer would also apply to my query earlier regarding my TV set?

I have already gone back to where I purchased the TV (sainsbury's) and they are not interested and have referred me to Sony ( the manufacturer).

    Thanks

Yes, as you can see from the quotes and links, your contract is with the retailer, print and copy the SoGA and take them to Sainsburys, if still no joy contact Trading Standards.

  • I have purchased a second hand Renault Laguna from a garage, It is on a 03 plate and cost me just under £4000, now I have 3 months warrenty on the vehicle so have got it checked out and as I always change the timing belt when I get a new car I have looked into getting this done, this is going to cost me the best part of £500. The book states that the belt needs changing at 72000 miles or five years old whichever comes first. The car was serviced by the garage at 58000 miles but it was by then already 5 years old some people I have spoken to have said that they should have changed the belt before selling me the vehicle as it had reached the age for it to be done I have checked with them and it was not changed, is this something I can asked them to do under warrenty or insist they do as it was due when I purchased the vehicle. Anybody any ideas??????? thanks in advance.
Claimed back almost £4000 so far from HSBC for mis-sold PPI
£2083.00 + £242.00 8% interest from FirstPlus and lower monthly premiums:D Studio Cards paid off my account and gave me £125.00 in gift vouchers. £500.00 Barclays.
