Best way to do this is:
1. Ask for a PAC code and take it to a different network (3 or T-Mobile is okay) as a pre-pay customer.
2. Wait for 5 days (time it takes for the number to change over)
3. Ask the new network for a PAC code again and take this to O2 (takes 5 days again).
This way you become a new customer to O2 and get to keep your old number.
T-Mobile or 3 will ask you to topup £5 when you port it as a pre-pay.
You cannot "port" the number to the same network but can always take it back to a previous network. What they are saying is pure BS.0 -
Was going to see if back in stock but o2 retentions closed due to snow! All I get is a pre-recorded message, I'm destined to never get this bloody 3gs!!0

i'd wait 6 months matey. my 3G contract is up and I can upgrade to 3GS but what's the point when Iphone 4 will be out in early summer.
i'm just going to move to simplicity until June0 -

Because I've been without an iphone for a year and can wait no more (even though I'm on month 18 of an iphone 3g contract, I dropped it down the toilet last year!). I've been offered a good deal, 32gb 3gs for free, 18 month contract, £35/month - if I want to go for the iphone 4 i may just sell the 3gs on ebay..0 -

You don't need to get a different network sim. Just call up o2 and ask them for a free PAYG sim. Transfer the number you want to keep onto the PAYG sim, then back onto the new sim. I forgot about that, but that was how I did it last year when I had the same problem.0 -

Exactly what I'm doing. If the iPhone 4 is loads better, I'll still get a good deal selling my 3GS on eBay, otherwise I'll wait till the end of my contract and get the iPhone 5, which will be 4G by then I reckon...0 -
With the payg iphone can you keep porting your same number every 12 months and use the free internet sims on ebay?0

Hi all,
I've just upgraded to the 32gb 3GS for free - it is a refurb but the lady did say that it came with a full 12month warranty and should be perfect cosmetically. I was, and still am, on the iPhone £35 contract that comes with 600 mins and 500 texts. I managed to get it without any negotiation, I just said, my friend did this, can I do the same, and she said yes! Makes me think I should have asked for more!
What i'm thinking is, if I decide in a few months I might quite like the Nexus One, can I just sell my iPhone and put the sim in the Nexus? Its ~£330 unlocked, I would buy one now but I want to wait until its out on Vodafone so I can see how it feels and works. Would the unlimited internet on the iPhone contract work with the google phone?
