Thank you d123 for clarifying that point. It got me a bit worried for a moment there! Anyway I suppose the best thing for me to do would be to buy an unlocked iPhone and then buy the sim card from a provider of my choice wherever I am living at the time...is this too simple? Am I missing something?

i know but to change it was a big hassle, they said i had to send my handset back NOW and revert back to my simplicity until the 3gs is in stock which is someime withing the next month... and then it would be down to what deals were available at the time. She couldnt guarantee a phone withing next week or so and i would be without a phone. Too much hassle ....

I've just made the daily call to 02 retentions and still no re-boxed 3gs in stock. The sales advisor then went on to advise that not only could they say when they would be back in stock, but also that they may not be having anymore !! :(

The iPhone 4.0 software is due to be announced this Thursday. This may indicate when to expect the next generation iPhone so hold tight for now if your planning to take out a 18/24 month contract.

When the 3.0 software was announced and then introduced later in the year, thats when the 3Gs was released.

i found the cheapest way for me was to get free blackberry upgrade from orange which came with 3g sim, i then sold this on on ebay for £250 and bought a new iphone 3gs off there for £379 effective cost £129! i have now put my orange sim in, so pay just £15 per month on 18 month contract with 800 mins, 300 text and unlimited internet, which i think would cost me around £40 on a iphone tariff.

far cheaper than any of the other deals on offer even tesco!

could have done a new contract via quidco and come out with an iphone and cash in your pocket using your method ;)

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet (its a very long thread..) but has anyone else tried an iPhone on o2 payg? Its especially good if you don't call much, but all you do is text!

I shelled out the £449 on the 16gb iphone 3gs which was very very hard for me to do :p but I get the free web&wifi bolt on for a year, and I get to keep my text&web tariff from my last o2 phone. This means that I topup £10 a month to get unlimited texts to all networks and unlimited web access. It works out much cheaper overall than going on any contract.

o2 payg also do suprises (ring up 2211 from your o2 phone) and I have bagged myself 20 anytime minutes a month for 3 months, as well as the o2suprises code where you have to fish for duckies for yet another reward. They also reward you with a certain percentage of what you have topped up in the previous 3 months.

where did you get that idea from?

Jailbreaking and software unlocking might impact on warranty but simply using another sim from the same network has no bearing on warranty.

from the woman at 02 after saying can i use my partners 3gs and him my 3g they said no because it will invalidate my warranty...

I have a 16gb 3gs on O2 PAYG, but bought it from Tesco (Tesco mobiles uses O2) With Tesco, whatever you top up, they triple your credit, so if you top up £10, they apply £30 top up to your phone. The free credit also gets used first, then when that runs out, you use the money you topped up with. I prefer this to a package that offers xx texts or xx minutes, as month to month my needs may change, so one month I might send loads of texts, but the next need to make lots of calls. They also do half price calls/texts to your 5 favourite numbers which helps cut down on the usage too

She is talking rubbish: a warranty is on the product not the person, a product must legally be fit for purpose and last a reasonable amount of time in normal use. You would only invalidate the warranty by not treating the handset according to manufacturer's instructions, and Apple do not forbid new SIM cards! You could invalidate your insurance by handing the phone to a family member or friend - perhaps she/ you are getting confused with that?

That itself will not invalidate any warranty, but if something happens to the phone you will have to quote the correct mobile number with the correct IMEI number.. They are paired in their system so if you call to say that something is not working they will ask you for the phone no and IMEI - if it doesn't fit together they won't deal with it any further... It is kind of for security reasons. To make sure that you are not claiming damage on phone that didn't come from them.

I used to have that on Orange at work, we had many PDAs and the guys kept swaping phones (don't ask me why) and I had to keep track of numbers&IMEI numbers constantly... It was a nighmare...
