Cheapest iPhone discussion

  • Tesco seems like a good deal but I am currently in a contract with O2 and would like to buy an iphone to use my existing sim card in.

Can you use the Tesco iphone with an O2 sim card straight out of the box? (I know they are locked but aren't Tesco and O2 the same network by different branding??)
Just wondering whether anyone has tried this?
  • I've been following this discussion with interest and difficulty over the last week. My BF and I both have mobiles: mine is just "for emergencies" ie I never use it; he uses his but rarely. He makes the occasional call and gets texts with his football team's goals but that's about it.

I am in a fairly similar situation (been with them ages, light user, don't upgrade often). The impression I get is that Orange don't really care about doing deals for long time customers on lower tariffs who do not upgrade all the time. Possibly working on the basis if you haven't left yet then you are unlikely to.

Probably a fair chance that he can get an not too bad deal on a fairly low spec phone and a new contract, but it would appear from reading around here that Orange are generally unwilling to do any deals on the iPhone for most people.

    All the best

Are there any other cashback sites for Tesco Direct?

I use Quidco (I've had £52 validated from Tesco in Dec/Jan, with presents and treat buying) and Tesco tracks, validates and pays rather quickly.

be gentle with me as me first post!!!

I've been reading this thread for a while now as i want an Iphone and am due an upgrade with o2 soon..... so i rung them to see what they could do....

i'm a month away from an upgrade, so i offered to buy the remaining on my contract, which i was told i could only do if i wanted to upgrade to an Iphone... happy days i thought as i do.... told them that was the plan and they set the wheels in motion...... so got the buying contract bit out of the way and asked them what offers/deals they could give me...... "sorry sir we cannot offer u any deals as you have not finished your contract"!!!! u mean the one i'm willing to pay off because i want a new phone????? Prats... :)

So..... my renewal/upgrade date is the 5th feb, so when/if i get a 'deal' i will share it on here.... :)

    cheers

Is calling 08702 203 315 any different from 202 then option 2 and option 2 again?
  • Seems all the suppliers are keeping very similar iphone deals but expect someone to crack later this year - here's hoping!

No idea but there are certainly no options involved when you dial the 0870 number - straight through to retentions
We all evolve - get on with it

I'm basically writing on his behalf. He's had the same mobile phone for about 9 or 10 years, so obviously it's really ancient! He's got an ongoing contract with Orange and I think he pays about £20 per month, which I think is a shocking waste of money given how terrible the phone is ie no camera or anything! He has never upgraded after trying to do so many years ago and being told he didn't use it enough to qualify. He'd really like an iphone or similar as the additional functionality would be more useful than basic calls or texts, but we just don't know where to start! I imagine he should ring Orange retentions and try to negotiate with them, but I think he'd like to leave them and start from scratch. Would he be better off cancelling the contract and getting a phone from Tesco? He also finds going into phone shops really embarrassing.
Have you got any simple advice (not too technical) for two rather naive people?
    Thanks very much in advance!

You are right - it is a shocking waste of money.
Get onto PAYG as soon as possible, both of you.
It doesn't really matter which company, most of them are similar, but I'm sure someone can give you a good idea which is cheapest.
Go to Tesco and buy a reasonable phone for less than £100, add in their PAYG sim and with the costs of texts it will still be drastically less than his £20 per month.

And as for the iPhone, is it worth the £462 min cost for what may turn out to be an expensive and uneccessary toy, considering he doesn't use the phone part of it?

A lot of people here say how good a deal they get for having "1000 mins & 1000 texts for only £35 per month" or similar.
But they don't say how much they use.

One of my friends recently had a deal like this for £30 per month, £10 more than his previous contract, and was of proud of how much he had sqeezed out of the phone company.
But when I calculated how much he used it, it worked out that it would have only been £17 on PAYG on his most expensive month.

A good way to check is to reset the data counter on your phone at the beginning of each month and send yourself a text with the results at the end of the month.
Add up how much it would be on a PAYG tariff (I use 10p per min and 10p per text as an average), and if its less than £15 then you are almost certainly bettre off on PAYG.

I already have a phone on the Tesco Mobile staff tariff and when I logged onto my account last week, I noticed that there was £70 voucher available to me so that I could upgrade my phone.

I requested it and it was delivered 3 days later.

My OH is going to use this voucher and my 10% staff discount to get one from a nearby Tesco with a phone store (Oldham).

He was considering the interest free online option, but when I discovered the voucher he decided it was the best option.

We picked the phone up yesterday and the total cost for a 16GB 3GS on PAYG was £326 (£44 staff discount and £70 upgrade voucher).

If you have a phone on the Tesco Mobile tariff, log on to:-
    http://www.tesco.com/mobilenetwork/mytescomobile.aspx?page=7

Go to the My Tesco Mobile section, as there could be a voucher worth up to £100 waiting for you, to be spent on ANY Tesco Mobile phone.
The £70 voucher was a nice surprise for me (as a light user of my phone) and came in handy for the OH.
