NUS EXTRA rip off
Comments

My student card/library card simply says nus on the back in really tiny size and it has worked in cinemas and clubs and shops - only haven't been able to use it really online and at mcdonalds etc but then - I dont eat meat anyway!
I think that the extra card would be well worth it if I didnt have this, my bf (who doesnt have this on his student card) had one in his first year but forgot and didnt want to pay £10 to only use the card xmas -> september and i think that he has wasted loads of money and it annoys me when we go to 2 4 1 at the cinema etc because we have to pay full price!! I think it is annoying that you have to pay for it but with all the possible discounts, it easy pays for itsself in a year.0 -
I've got the NUS card which I had to pay for, and after not going into HMV for nearly a year I was rather annoyed when the guy at the till rudely said that he couldn't accept it for student discount, as apparently I needed a special HMV card. Whenever I'd asked for one before, I was told "oh no you don't need one because we keep them at the till" so I tried to explain to the guy but he just refused, and said I'd have to wait until September for next year's cards.
My NUS card has been rather useful when going to the cinema though, they keep on putting the prices up and it's just getting silly really.0 -
I don't really use my NUS Student card and I'm like the only student who actually has one. The only time it has been some use is buying a chemistry book on Amazon which got me a 5% discount. My economics teacher recommedned I get one, and he said that they were also becoming acceptable forms of ID (photo name age), I think.0

I wouldn't have thought so, you might find the odd pub/bar that is lax about it but the date of birth is written on and the picture is just stuck on so all it would need was for someone to get some blank cards from somewhere and fill them in themselves.0 -
I don't know about you, but my NUS Extra card was printed with my photo and sent to my Uni... No pritt stick in sight!I wouldn't have thought so, you might find the odd pub/bar that is lax about it but the date of birth is written on and the picture is just stuck on so all it would need was for someone to get some blank cards from somewhere and fill them in themselves.0 -

Oh must depend on the uni then. At mine we paid online then had to go to the student union office with a photo. They had a load of blank cards asked you to fill in the name and date of birth with a pen then they put the photo on and there was a sticky plastic flap which they pealled off and stuck over it. The only thing printed is the number and uni name.0 -
Just been on the site and they have updated it for the new year, looks like the discounts are even worse than last year. Seem to be less places that you can use it, a lot of stores have dropped out unless they just haven't been added to the new site yet.

Doesn't let existing cardholders logon either, I guess we're not allowed to use the site for the last 2 months we have paid for.0 -
Maybe you have to register again because they updated the site? I dunno, that would be a bit silly though.0

Burger king in newcaste offers 20% off with NUS card on pilgrim st in newcastle, however i dont know if this is true of all burger kings. Regardless the one time i got discount here was just from my bog standard college card. Its probably worth buying a university of sutton novelty ID whether your a student or not.0

Some of them are franchises as well and they don't do 20% discount. The ones that do are meant to have a sign somewhere in the store stating that they do the student discount.0
