NUS EXTRA rip off

The HMV thing was discussed on here a while back. They did give student cards out until about April/May this year but then the Head Office asked the stores to send any remaining ones back to them. What happened in some stores when you showed an NUS Extra card was that they just swiped a HMV Student Card they had by the till rather than giving you one to keep (unless you asked for one of course). When they got asked to send the cards back they sent the cards they were using for people with NUS Extra back as well. Meaning that they no longer had any cards they could swipe to give people the discount unless they had their own discount card. I'm guessing they will start issuing new student cards for 08/09 in September so make sure you ask them for one, it has an additional advantage anyway as you can use the HMV Student card online as well, which you can't do with NUS Extra.
Regarding McDonalds its probably because your local one is a franchise rather than run by McDonalds themselves, not all the franchises will accept the NUS Discount, same with Burger King.0 -
I stopped my NUS card as soon as they started charging for it (well made the extra card for discount). Just about everywhere that gives discounts with the extra card has their own student thing anyway. Apart from Amazon I couldn't see the point andin my case did not justify the £10 charge.0

I've never had any problems with NUS cards. I wasn't overjoyed when they started charging for the 'extra' card however I must admit it was a good investment. I couldn't even put a figure on how much I've saved and hopefully there will be more to come, with it being a ISIC card as well I can use it interrailing next month (woop!).0

You don't have to apply for the extra card you can just apply for the ordinary nus card, the extra card is gimmicky and aimed at niave freshers or those who know no better. I have found my general student card has been enough to get me discounts where it matters.0

how and where can you apply for the ordinary acrd. Iv heard people saying that you can still get them on forums, but at the student union at my uni, they say that these no longer exist and that you can only get one by paying £10 which is the extra card.
I bought one last year, but loads of mcdonalds iv been into dont accept them as well as other places which should do. This year i decided that i would see if my ordinary student card works, but if i could get a free nus card that would be even better:confused:I say im a moneysaver, my family think im a cheapskate!0 -

They do still exist but Its up to your uni to offer it, they get some of the money back from each NUS Extra card they sell so your student union probably don't want to miss out on this money by letting people go for the free card . There isn't another way of getting one if your uni doesn't offer it. At my Uni we have the choice between NUS Extra (£10) or NUS Democracy Card (Free).0 -

There are more McDonalds owned stores than there are Franchises. The franchise stores are generally in retail parks or at service stations but there are some in town and city centres as well. You can normally tell its a franchise because most of the time they are more expensive than normal McDonalds. It does say on the NUS site for the McDonalds offer "Participating Resturants Only".0 -
Apply for the UCAS card, its great. Works everywhere and its free, although takes about 2months to come through via snail mail...Like what I said? click thanks!:rotfl: :rotfl:
