No one lives in area code 0500 so everyone has to dial 0500 999100 in full so no confusion with 999. If your phone number was 01407 1234567 and you wanted to ring 01407 9999999 you would dial just 9999999 and call the emergency services before you had finished keying in the number.

Not if dialing from a mobile! The OP quoted the full number including dialing code. The OP has never stated if the call was received on a mobile or a landline,(or even if they live in Holyhead), so stop making assumptions, I gave a valid number that would/could be dialed in full from a mobile or a landline, just because you live in Holyhead does not preclude you from using the STD code, a pointless exercise, but not impossible.

Why are you starting an argument for the sake of it?

The OP said " It is clearly a false number as it starts with 999 "

I quoted a valid number beginning 999, proving the statement wrong irrespective of dialing codes, as I said you need to dial the code from a mobile a point the OP did not put forward.

I agree the 99999999 is false but that is not what you appear to want to pursue, grow up!

Why change the subject to dialling from a mobile? I said "If your number was 01407 1234567" which is not a mobile number. It doesn't matter that someone dialling from a mobile (or from a landline outside the 01407 area) would have to dial the "01407" and not have a problem. What matters is that the number would not be issued because of the problem that I have pointed out.

Stick to discussing the topic and avoid the abuse.

    The thread here: http://www.saynoto0870.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.cgi?num=1090685614

discusses numbers that are out of the normal "range". Specifically, those that start with an "0"; for example 01234 000111. Obviously, if you attempt to dial 000111 locally, the exchange will take it as an international call (00 being the international code), so they have to be dialled in full.

By process of elimination, it may (although I haven't looked at the Ofcom site to check) be possible to have a number 01234 999999, but it would also have to be dialled in full as dialling 999999 would really annoy the emergency services.

Geographical phone numbers cannot start with 999. As has been stated several times already, someone calling the number from the same geographical area would end up calling the emergency services.

Can't you customise a geographic number for VOIP?

You miss the point of my post.

The thread I have referenced shows numbers that cannot be dialled locally but need to be dialled in full. As you state, you shouldn't be able to have a number beginning 999, and by the same token, you shouldn't have a zero as the start of a local number. In the examples given, the local part of the number starts with a zero, thus cannot be dialled locally, but must be dialled in full.

If a number starts with a 0 or a 9, then, even if you are in the local exchange code, you would have to dial the whole number, including the STD code.

I take on board your comment that it would be daft to have a number beginning 999, my point here is that there are numbers which cannot be dialled locally without the STD code which others seem to think is not possible.
