Reverse lookup is illegal in the UK.

Only way is to google the number or hope someone knows it here.

Or even just do a search of this site:
    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=8768743

So yes it looks like it is Sky.

When Sky called me the number displayed on the phone was 0800 0512592 which is geographical number 01506 421300. Unfortunately calling these numbers just gives you a Sky recorded message that you have been called.

The Sky Business Support Team can be contacted on 08702 400024 and they only work office hours, so a 10+ minute call will cost you around a pound depending on your telecom supplier. You would need to be on the Simply Digital contact list in order to get the £300+ discountwink.gif

  • Having suffered from nuisance calls for the last 20 years, as an amateur I would like to share my experiences and pass on the methods I have used to put a stop to them.

Firstly an ex-directory number is a real asset, also get caller ID on your 'phone.
Register with The Telephone Preference Service http://www.tpsonline.org.uk and whilst you're at it register with The Mailing Preference Service http://www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/, both can be done online. It is illegal for anyone registered to be contacted for the purpose of selling without their consent. So take care filling in forms or giving your details especially online, make sure you tick the opt out boxes, they usually reside at the end of the form and deny them the opportunity to evade your defences.

If anyone suffers susequently it is then a matter for the Information Comissioner's Office http://www.ico.gov.uk where there's plenty of good advice or Ofcom http://www.ofcom.org.uk/ where again there's a wealth of helpful advice.

If you can't identify an offening number for example when a silent or predictive dialler is the culprit, note the number and visit http://www.snozwangler.com/ there are literally thousands of numbers here, many with the address of the company and a suitably worded letter should soon have them quaking.

Finally don't be put off by offshore callcentres, especially India, they don't register on the caller ID display. Ask which company they are calling on behalf.
Ofcom is your tool for this job, they will take action against any company with a UK presence breaking the rules.
Persevere, you will win and get your peace and quiet back.
  • Just got in to a person saying hello, can I speak to.... hello, HELLO - on the answer machine.

Just googled it but it didnt come up with anything

Anyone have any idea who it may be? Registered with TPS so I would love to find out who they are!

    Thanks

It's a free call, phone them back?

    Using 141 before dialling, obviously.

Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.

!!!!!! do these people want?

They've called again today, no message, so it must be an autodialler.

Why can't they ring when I'm in so I can get them to leave me alone??!!

Several times during the week (weekdays only, so maybe office based?) I get a call from a withheld number. When I answer, all I get is a beep. It usually happens 3 times with 5 minutes inbetween calls.

I'm assuming it's a fax machine trying to send?

It's been going on for a while and is driving me daft. How can I stop the calls if the number is withheld? I have no way of finding out where the calls originate.

I suppose I could always buy a fax and recieve the messages, lol. Not very moneysaving though.

Quick fix is to contact your phone provider (BT?) and ask them for advise. I know BT offer a service to block withheld numbers which would do it.

Problem is some people who phone me genuinely also have withheld numbers so I wouldn't want to block ALL withheld iyswim.

I will phone BT if I have to, but I always find it so difficult trying to get the foreign call centre people to understand me.

There is no easy way of doing it without that.

You can have the call blocker on for a month and then have it removed but when a call is blocked it gives a automated message to the caller telling them why it's blocked and the caller can bypass it by typing 141 in front of your number.

The other options are to have your number changed or to see if BT can run a trace which I don't know they can.
