You can have the call blocker on for a month and then have it removed but when a call is blocked it gives a automated message to the caller telling them why it's blocked and the caller can bypass it by typing 141 in front of your number.

Problem is some people who phone me genuinely also have withheld numbers so I wouldn't want to block ALL withheld

BT offer a Calling Feature called 'Choose to Refuse' which enables you to block specific telephone numbers (even if withheld) instead of all withheld numbers.

However, it does have a monthly fee - though the part of BT which deals with nuisance calls may be able to give it to you free for a month

Otherwsie, make sure you are registered with the TPS and/or the Slient CallGuard Service

zebidee1, the service I was talking about was Anonymous Call Reject from BT at £4.00 per month.

Heinz, thanks my mistake 141 is to block, 1470 is to unblock caller ID.

gt94sss2, do you use 'Choose to Refuse'? I never knew about this one. The price for this is £3.35 per month.

I talked to BT and they said both the above options are free for 30 days so long as you state it's related to nuisance calls.

One last option I found after gt94sss2 pointed out Silent Callguard Service is something called CallBocker from CallBocker Ltd which is a hardware solution that costs a one off payment of £69 and they say they can guarantee it stops 100% of all nuisance calls and does not affect sky/ADSL/fax machines or calls from family members or friends. From what I can tell is it uses a automated message system and option menu where the caller has to press a button to confirm they wish to proceed with the call. I guess it's an option for those not with BT or those who don't want to pay a monthly fee. You can order it or get more information about it through the Silent Callguard Service phone number.

It's great what you learn around here! :D

I'm with BT's TPS and it works fine for UK based cold-calling. The main problem lies with non-UK call centres - which as we all know are usually UK firms operating from foreign call centres anyway. I am still receiving calls for the 'previous owner' of our phone number even after 18 months. It drives me mad trying to explain that I am NOT Mrs P******* D****** - and have been told on one occasion 'Oh yes you are!'. If ever I meet the woman, I'll probably get done for cold-blooded murder!!!!!

Another nuisance type of call is the USA based organisations that contact you and tell you that you have won a holiday or something similar. These seem to come from an automatic dialling centre and when you answer the phone you get an automated message telling you that you have won and please to stay on the line for the operator - eventually a human voice comes to speak to you. The problem with them is that they randomly dial about 5 numbers at the same time and then the first person to answer their phone gets the recorded message. Anybody else who picks up the phone just after that first person gets the dialling tone - so you think that you've missed your caller. I find that these usually happen at weekends.

I've now got to the stage of not answering calls that show on my Caller ID as 'International'.

I hope none of your friends or family use 1899, 18185 or 18866 to reduce their call costs then because calls via them nearly always show as 'International' on Caller Display.

You could do 1471 to find out the number that is ringing you.

Then find a friend who has a fax machine or go to somewhere that will send them (you may even be able to do it on your computer) and send that number a fax telling them the date and time of the fax and that they are calling a voice line.

Hopefully it will then stop. If not then try the other suggestions.

unfortunately that doesn't work with a withheld number, which is what the OP has a problem with, you just get a message to the effect that the caller cannot be identified

I like the idea of this Callblocker machine. And you can record your own message. How about:

"Hi, you've reached [my number]. Friends can speak to us by pressing 5. If you are a telesales agent and would like to offer us goods or services, we will gladly listen to your sales pitch for a one time fixed fee of £250. If you agree to these terms and wish to proceed press 5 now."

Excellent! I wonder what they would do if you issued a court summons for any that dared to click thru
Help me to help you :santa2:
