Hi all! Just heard back from Tiscali today after a long week of swapping e-mails about nuisance calls. They just say report it to the Police - is this normal in anyone's experience?
No. The calls aren't abusive or threatening so they have nothing to do with the police.

Your telephone service provider should have a means of dealing with such things (i.e. like BT has for its customers - its Nuisance Calls Bureau).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Hello, another victim of this here, after using MoneySupermarket.com. All signs seem to point their way as the source of these nuisance calls.
  • I have today had three calls from these bozos from the number 0121 273 3761. I have caller ID and this number appeared on each of the calls. The first two times I told the guy that they had the wrong number. The third time (about 30 mins ago) I told him that he had the wrong number and to stop calling or I would report them.

I asked where they got my number from and he had the lame excuse / cover story that someone had given him £200 to ring my number - !!!!!!???

The guy sounded Asian and I asked him what company he was ringing from - he repeated it about three times but I could hardly understand what he said. It was xxxxx Finance???

Anyway, this phone call got me so riled up I did a Google search and this forum page came up - thank goodness. I was worried that I was being targeted by a crank or something!!

But next time this "company rings" and I see their number on the caller ID, I'll just pick up the phone and hang up straight away.

I now waste their time when they ring me.....eg "can I put you on hold for a minute or two" and put them on handsfree while going about my business, checking with them theyre still there every few minutes or so.

A new one I had was "hello can I check you Sky system is working OK".....I dont have one!!!

Surely the answer to that is simply, "OK, go ahead. Let me know what you find will you?"

This number called my house today at around lunchtime while I was work, but I don't recognise the number. I googled it, but there's nothing coming up specifically.

I know it's a central Leicester number by searching for STD code lists and then entering the number, but that's it.

Does anyone else know who it is? I thought could be a recruitment agency, but whoever it was left no message (quite typical nowadays, especially from withheld numbers).

I got a call from an 0116 number today and didn't know what it was. I don't give my house number out to anyone, but funnily enough, have used it on a few competitions on this site yesterday, and on the CLoser bingo website.
DId you do any of these?

  • When I get strange numbers ringing my phone I usually ring them back from work and see who answers.

No, I didn't. I don't do competitions like these. Well, other than texting The Gadget Show comp, but that's really all.

I called it back from home (have TalkTalk Talk 3 plan, so unlimited UK landline calls), but all I get is a dead tone as if the number's out of service - sounds like a CLI spoofer at work to me.
