Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

i have now added the number 08009157111 on my home phone and when it now rings me up its displayed as 'dont answer ' :-) so now i ignore it0 -
This could be down your number being in a predicitive dialer.. companies put them in when say your insurance is up for renewal or they are just checking you are satisfied with the service they have suppied u and at the same time get you to buy more. As it happens the company i work with are dealing with a case with a predictive dialer is not working correctly and is disconnectin after connection with the customer.. this has been going on for a few good weeks now. The diailer automatically checks a database where insurance is up for renewal an dials the customer automatically, if the customer picks up then that connects to a agent with details on the screen ready, at the moment our one company are getting dead air on 20% of there calls..0

I expect the line going dead when you answer is someone ticking a list to establish that your number is valid and therefore ripe for cold calling at a later date by many other companies.
This is also probably down to a Predictive dialer.. the dailer rings 10 numbers with only 8 agents logged in.. assuming 20% will not get answered or be engaged...obviously the dialer got it wrong this time and 9 connected but 8 agents were busy so the call connecting to you didnt have an available agent. Or this company could be having the same problem as we are trying to sort for another company.0 -
Can i ask are many people out there getting a deadline or disconnected call alot over the last month?? i'm thinking the problem my company are looking into is natonwide and not local...0

These are what are known as "silent calls".You can register with tps for them(not companies based abroad though).0 -

They have Peugeot and MoneySuperMarket amongst their number of clients. Rumoured to also have Virgin Media and are in contract talks with Setanta Sports TV channel for the future.

Hi all,
I am with Tiscali for phonr calls, internet and line rental. Recently, I've had a couple of nuisance calls (1 at 6.45am and another at 5.10 Sun morning).
I also had one of the numbers some time ago too.
Tiscali do a call barring service but I don't see why I should pay really, but I am more anxious to get to the base of the problem.
Any ideas please. They are both local numbers.
