When I get calls from such companies, I either explain in a grave voice that I died 2 weeks ago or just say I rent the property. I've had lots of calls recently about "just carrying out a mortgage survey" ... or should they be saying "we're just finding out as much about your mortgage as possible so we can sell the details to a provider".

On the unwanted marketing calls..... have reported numerous to the TPS and the calls have pretty much stopped now.The last one was obviously from some call centre abroad. I kept saying 'no speaky english' and 'pardon??' time and time over - they quickly hung up. :)I would definitely report the abusive call as advised though.
  • I get annoying phonecalls from very foreign sounding people asking for the previous owner of the house, I usually put on the best chav accent I can manage and I reply "there ain't no Mrs B her" and when they ask for the homeowner, I just go "I ain't a homeowner, just renting her", when they want to confirm the postcode, I just go, "nah, we're in Redditch, herrr". Then they !!!!!! off.

Good idea, the voice from the grave. I should try that. I ahve already tried the trick of pretending to have bricked all my windows when double glazing companies call.

Coming back to the OP, I would not sweat about it. If he calls again, just let him get himself worked up, it is usually funny!

I just tell them an obvious lie, like I'm emigrating to Micronesia tomorrow. Ends the conversation immediately.

Alternatively if you speak a foreign language, start jabbering away at them.

Also with BT's choose to refuse you don't need to know the number before hand, even if it's withheld, you just select the option block the last caller. Whether this works for international calls I don't know.

However cable doesn't offer choose to refuse.

ive read about this feature and its says you need to know number so you can block it... confused now..

    Okay enough is enough now...

Complaints to BT nuisance calls have lead to Cable & Wireless saying that the issue has been dealt with. The calls have continued.

Complaints to OFCOM have gotten nowhere, they have merely logged them for monitoring.

Left messages telling them to take me off their list, which I shouldn't be on anyway and the calls increase in volume.

TPS will do nothing because I can't find the companies name.

Looking into changing my telephone number to stop them I have learned that when you do that BT Openworld handily cease your broadband provision for you, incurring you cease/reprovision fees and leaving you without broadband for up to 3 weeks.

So does anybody have a number for BT Openworld to make sure that they don't do this if I change my number to a new one. Spent 2hrs being passed from wrong department to wrong department before emailing Ben Verwaayen over an hour ago, there has been no response from him as of yet so I thought it might be quicker to ask here.

Does anyone have a number for contacting BT OpenWorld?

I don't think that BT Openworld will speak to you directly, only their customers.

    This gets stranger and stranger...

When I was with BT Retail for broadband I changed my number and received no interruption in service.

Now I am considering changing my number to stop these calls because nobody seems bothered enough to do anything to stop them and I'm with a different broadband provider, it seems that they are going to cancel my broadband, forcing me to go 3 weeks without a connection and pay for a reconnection!

Smacks of anti-competitive behaviour to me! Though is it BT so why the hell am I surprised?

If you know the number you can add that number to the refused list, if the caller withheld their number, then you add that after the call and select to refuse the last number.

I've had to use this previously and can confirm you can block the caller even if they have withheld their number.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

I keep getting calls from 0121 273 3761, a rather dodgy Brum based company, from what I've read.

I'm with Talk Talk so don't know if I can use the BT number to block calls from them. Does anyone know how to go about this through Talk Talk? BT supplies my line, Talk Talk does everything else.
