00 is the dialling code you dial for an international number, surely you must have come across that?
1 is the code for the USA, like 44 is the code for the UK.
Heinz has explained it well.
You can get International freephone numbers those are 00 800.[/quo
Am grateful,of course, to Heinz. Just intrigued by the "But I doubt it" after Heinz's explanation. What is Heinz suggesting?0 -

Heinz just meant, you can't believe the the number given out on 1471 / Caller Display is genuine, it could easily have been spoofed.
I used to spoof my CLID just for fun making it look like friends, neighbours or other relatives were calling and also to get around people who had Anonymous Caller Reject without me having to give them my try number.
Now I still spoof CLID, but you wouldn't call it spoofing in this sense of my use, as it is a number I have access to, when I call out using my VoIP line, I have the phone number presented as either my landline, my mobile or if I don't want the person I am calling to have a number they can contact me on, they get presented with a number that is permanently set to voicemail.
So this means, don't trust the number on 1471 / Caller Display to be the real number that called you. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
I've just had a call from 020 8433 6081. They said they are conducting market reasearch and not selling anything.
When she asked:
"Could you spare some time to answer some questions?"
I said:
"No, can you remove me from your calling list please?"
She said:
"There is no calling list, we dial numbers randomly."
I said:
"So there is no way to ask you to stop calling me in the future?"
She said:
"Yes, that's correct".
I was under the impression that all companies were obliged to honour opt-out requests, whether they dial randomly or not? If yes, who do I complain to?0 -

As theyre stupid enough to not withhold their number, and they insist on being a potential nuisance to you in the future, use your free BT, Talktalk or mobile minutes to phone them back at unsociable hours, just leaving your phone on handsfree next to the radio or TV.
I do the handsfree thing now whenever anyone rings me to conduct market research, sell me shares, or any subject if theyre speaking with an accent I cant understand (Bangalore rather than Bury).illegitimi non carborundum0 -

How do you spoof a phone number?
Use a service provider that lets you set the out-going number to anything you like, it's only data at the end of the day.
At one time the VoIP providers I used allowed you to send anything as CLID, however they no longer run VoIP just carried on with their old in-direct access service.
My current VoIP services allows me to send out a different CLID, however they have to be numbers you have access to.
BT allow you to send out a different 'presentation' number, however they charge for this. This is mainly used if you have several lines with different numbers but want only one number to be displayed, such as the main switchboard number.
CLID in most cases will be correct, but it's not something you can rely on being correct all the time. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
I thought I read long ago of gadgets placed between the phone socket and the phone that stopped the phone ringing if the calling number was on the barred (or not on the approved) list. This would seem to be more flexible, and in the long term cheaper, than paying for the telephone service provider to screen the calls. I have searched online but cannot find such a device. Does anyone have any information about such devices?0

Telephone Preference Service.
I thought that too, so I went about submitting a complaint to TPS and got this reply:The Telephone Preference Service aims to stop "direct marketing" calls and is unable to stop calls from a company conducting Market Research since they are asking for opinions rather than selling their products or services.
So it seems they don't want to help me. It also goes on to say:If you want to stop these calls or any other non-direct marketing calls, you will need to contact the companies that make them directly. I am therefore unable to investigate this particular complaint.
But as I stated previously the market research company said I can't opt-out.0
