Eco21,
I have a Nokia 9500 since I have had the phone Nokia have released a new software version that fixes a number of issues with the handset, do orange do a software upgrade service, or if I take it direct to a Nokia shop will this invalidate the warrenty for orange cover?Be ALERT - The world needs more LERTS0 -
@JSF:
Any phone is likely to come down in price over time. Unfortunately, very few shops will give you any form of a worthwhile "part exchange". If you want the phone on it's own/PAYG, your best bet would be to try eBay, and/or to sell off your existing handset on eBay.
As for buying the phone on contract and making sure he won't run up a huge bill, the majority of contracts have the ability to let you bar specific types of calls (e.g. premium rate, international, etc.) but this is no garuantee of low bills. The only garuanteed method is T-Mobile's U-Fix plans, which work like PAYG, but with contract rates. Line rental is paid monthly like with contract, by direct debit. Any extra spending on top of that (e.g. excess calls) will need the user to top up with vouchers/cards as per pre-pay.
@jordan_matthews:
Rumour has it that Orange has reached their "retentions target" for this month/quarter. There is no definate way you can get a free upgrade, your only chance is to either a) keep trying (ask again and again), or b) try again next month/year. Last year I was successful in getting a good deal, this year they refused to offer anything, thus I left seeing as another network offered a better deal.

@macgyver:
The free evening calls and free texts offers are available to all Orange PAYG customers, regardless of new or old. See http://shop.orange.co.uk/shop/payasyougo/upgrade for further details.
As a quick overview, you can get up to 1000 free texts a month, 1MB GPRS WAP access, as well as 600 minutes of evening calls per month depending on how much you top up. Again, check the above link for exact details.
@Fubar:
The warranty is supplied by Nokia, the manufacturer, and not by Orange. You will only invalidate the warranty if the phone is serviced by an unauthorized person. If you take the phone to an authorized (e.g. Club Nokia) service centre, this will not invalidate your warranty.
I'm not sure if Orange do a firmware upgrade themselves, perhaps Eco will answer that. Most Nokia authorized service centres will offer free firmware upgrades for phones under warranty. You may need to show them a purchase receipt to prove this though.0 -

Here's what I would do - maybe the Orange 'posters' (calling Eco21) in the know will agree with me;
Buy a Nokia 6680 on contract from Orange online. Currently it's free, with a £50 credit on 1st bill and also 6 months 1/2 price line rental. I believe it's on YP120 - normally £25 per month. The maths are as follow;
Phone = £0.00
6 months 1/2 price rental @ £12.50 = £75.00
then downgrade tariff to OVP Voda Business @ £14 per month = £84.00
TOTAL PRICE (1yr contract) = £159.00 less the automatic £50 credit for buying online - so new total cost of £109.00 - and for the first 6 months you also get 120 mins of X-Net calls.
Benefits - Credit on bill is automatic & 1/2 price rental is automatic
Personally I don't think you can go wrong at that price, though the downside is that Orange have really messed up the 6680's features, with certain standard Nokia features not working at all ... just Google or look on the Orange list for in-depth discussion & moans !
Cheers
