Hello , hope you all had a great easter bank holiday.
I am wanting to buy a new double divan bed, have been to harveys(sleepmasters) today and the manager tried to sell me a myers california backcare for £299.99 said its been reduced from £800, or a reylon, said it was the best maker of bed in the country - backcare supreme for £349.95.
I have tried to find info via google, but it keeps taking me back to the sleepmaster site...
Any advice is greatly received, i havent bought anew bed in years so dontreally know what to look for.
Thanks in advance x0 -

Can you give me the benefit of your advice please?
I'm currently on an open spring double mattress (firm) which has served me well for two decades (!), but the springs are now breaking through (!).
I'm looking for a replacement mattress without going overboard on costs. Since I've been happy on an open sprung mattress, I'm not convinced I need to pay the extra cost to go on to pocket sprung. And I'm also not convinced I would need a layer of memory foam on top, as I hate being hot at night. So I'm thinking of going just for another open sprung firm mattress but upgrading to a king size (it's resting on a king-size futon base anyway).
I've come across these mattresses for sale on M&S website and wondered whether you thought they are good value? (if so, I will go to the store to test them for firmness and comfort).
I'm most interested in the M100 (£159), which is straight open spring, but thought I'd also test the F100 (£319) which seems to be the same but with a layer of coolmax memory foam. Are these a good price?

My only worry is that they seem to be medium tension rather than firm. (the coil count they give on the website is not for the king size, but double I think, as they say elsewhere "spring count varies depending on mattress size").
If it's worth going in to test them. I thought I'd see what the pocket sprung ones are like too. They have a firm one for £479 which sounds good but seems a bit pricey (M400):

Hi.
It amazes me that all of the mattresses in your links are non turn. This isn't as important with open coil sprung mattresses, but a turnable mattress will still last far longer. With pocket sprung mattresses is can make a huge difference to the life of the mattress.
Anyway, a pocket sprung mattress wouldn't be suitable for a futon base, so that rules them out.
From what you have told me I would go for a good quality, firm, two sided, open coil sprung mattress, from an independent manufacturer where you will get more for your money.0 -
thanks Tim
the store did say it was the lower end of their better mattresses for double beds, it's a long standing local company, the bed is a friendship mill shaker bed 4' with a slatted base, I wanted one from a store to make sure I got it this week
It is probably more like the upper end of their lower range, but it should be ok.
Have you checked to see if firm is ok? Sometimes medium mattresses can be slightly cheaper.0 -

It doesn't surprise me at all as Sleepmasters, Harveys, Bensons, The Bed Shed, Relyon, and Sprung Slumber are all part of the Steinhoff group. So that model is probably exclusive to Sleepmasters, and probably the same model has a different name in Bensons and the Bed Shed. It probably also earns the sales rep huge comission.
After googling I'm also starting to think that the myers california backcare may also be exclusive to Sleepmasters.
If I were you I'd go for an independent manufacturer, rather than one of the huge names.0 -
Tim,
Very useful thread. Appreciate what you say about buying the mattress first but I have found a bed I really like. It has a multi-plywood base for the mattress with circular holes in it for airing - look about three inches diameter. There are 11 holes for each half of the bed.
I want to get a pocket spring mattress with memory foam on both sides would this be suitable for the bed bearing in mind what you have said re slat widths? Vendor says the bed is not suitable for full latex but doesn't mention anything else.
Also it is euro king size 160x200 will mattress manufacturers make this size specially if it is not advertised at this size?0 -
Thank you Tim for your advice and with such speed, i do appreciate it, i have just noticed you have mentioned lots of suppliers in yorkshire, and i do live in south yorks. Maybe its not a decision i should rush into, thank you once again.0

Well, on one of the entries it does say this: "While this comfortable mattress does not need to be turned, rotating any mattress will prolong its life." This suggests they are turnable but they put non-turn as a marketing ploy.
But thank you for your advice. Are you saying I could get a king-size open sprung turnable mattress for less than £159 then? What sort of budget range should I be looking for? (and where?!)
And why would a pocket-sprung mattress be unsuitable for a futon base? (it doesn't have slats - it is solid.)
Thanks.Best win: Sept 2008 LG steam washing machine

I have never heard of holes that big in a ply base, but as two sided pocket sprung/memory foam mattresses are suitable for gaps of up to 3", then I couldn't see it being a problem.
Most UK manufacturers will also make continental sizes on request.0 -

Most of the UK's bed industry is in the Yorkshire/Lancashire area. I think there are around 50 manufacturers.0 -
