Virgin Media Retention thread

  • Hi all, hoping for some advice.
We have asked Virgin to disconnect us this Saturday as we're buying a new place and want to start afresh when we move on Sunday.

I could transfer the account over, however, felt it better to cancel then start again as we don't mind the tel number being different.

My plan is to go with Virgin again via a cashback site and get £65 to sign up and a couple of months free.

Would this work, or do they save your name? The address will be completely different but names and bank account the same.
Any help much appreciated, thank you.

  • Hi all just a bump on the above, to see if you think that would be possible?

  • You need to wait for 6 months before you are considered as a new customer !
Perhaps you can take it under someone elses name who resides with you

Why not try the Free BT offer + O2, VM is the most expensive deal available even with loyalty discounts etc.
Even the call charges are higher..

Hi Happypuppy and thanks for your reply - what if my hubby signs up just in his name and his e-mail address?
Bank account info will still be the same, but address, account name will be different.
Also never use home phone for calls out as we both have mobiles.

All through, I kept it light and friendly, didn't demand a deal, just let them think I was determined to leave, but let them do the work.

I used the same approach in May this year, for the first time in 10 years I was treated to a fresh and courteous VM customer service.

I was efficiently, and without any compassion as a long standing customer, disconnected 28 days later!

I'll have to go back soon 'cause I'm more than 5km from the exchange and no one other than BT (your service will be up to 1 meg!) will sign me up.

Dial-up is service is so slow. Only time I get a decent connection now is in McDonalds car park!

Finally got a decent offer (IMHO) phone with eve/weekend calls and 10 meg BB for £10pm. It is about what I could have got BT and O2 bb for (after offers and cashback) but saves me the hassle of switching so I'm happy with that.

I'd be happy with that too. Is it a 12 month long deal or a forever deal? When you say finally got an offer what did you have to do to get it?

I'm on 20Mb BB and paying £31pm for phone (weekend only) and BB. I don't need 20Mb any longer and considering changing to O2 at £7.34pm as I already have a BT line.

I just told Virgin that I wanted to cancel and the 1st caller gave me nothing really, so the cancellation was set for a months time.

I knew that I could get my BT line reactivated at £11.50pm (with £25 quidco). O2 offer around £100 quidco (varies, and depends on package) and always seem to have a 3months free offer which combined would work out at just about free for BB (or even paying you!).

So I seemed to get a call every few days from Virgin but they couldn't come close to this. I thought I'd had the best offer, which wasn't good enough, so when the next person called I told them that I'd had loads of calls and that they'd have to beat the deal above for me to stay and was offered the £10 deal for the next 12 months.

I think it also helped that I'd put an order in with BT and wanted to take the cable number with me so I presume they will have had something on their system showing that I was serious. I've worked in call centres before and it is very easy to spot what people really want so if they think you won't really leave they won't offer you much.
  • Hi guys,

I wanted to get some advice. I have been paying just the line rental to Virgin for years and years! I now want to switch my TV/ BB over to them if I can get a good deal.

At the moment they are offering me £65 (with 2 months £10) and £75 for V+ box, this includes line rental, M BB, XL TV and Sky Sports. Would I get anything better if I say I want to cancel the phone line? what could I expect to get?

p.s Sorry for the long message!!

I have a BT line already. I don't use the NTL phone line but have hung onto it as it gave better discounts for broadband. So I have no problem going with O2.

Unfortunately no 3 months free offer on at the moment. I would get £50 cashback from Quidco as I would just take their base package as I can only get 7Mb as a maximum. Would probably work out about £40 for the year. I know I wouldn't get Virgin down to that but I may go for it still at £10pm.

I'm very serious. I've had speed issues recently where every evening I was getting from 1.5Mb to 3Mb on my 20Mb service. Although this is suppoed to be fixed all that has happened is that my slow time has moved from after 7pm to after 10pm.

    Thanks for your help.
