Depending on which modem you have, you are looking for the maximum downstream data rate.

How is your pc connected to the modem? USB or ethernet?

    Yes you are on 10Mb.

To get an accurate speed check go to
http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/battlefieldvietnam/patches/win32/ and download two large files. Add the combined speeds together to get the result. I usually get 1.1 - 1.2Mb/ sec which is correct for 10Mb.

If you do not get this rate then the tech guys in the support newsgroups will help. If you do not use newsgroups I can tell you how to set them up.

I'm currently paying £23 for the lowest Phone and BB package with free weekend calls.

I've just signed up to sky for TV so could get my phone and 2mb BB with a 2gb limit for £11pm, or 10Mb, 10gb for £16 from Sky

However I'd rather stay with Virgin so just just wondered what deals people have on either phone and bb or just BB. I called retentions last night and the best I got was £19pm. If they could get it down to £11 for either both or just BB I'd be very happy but would prob settle for £15pm. Is it realistic??

    Thanks

well, all was going well with my recent sign up, theres fibre optic in my street so a max of 50mps!! woo hoo!
I was assured it was all available to me and a date for installation was set (albeit a 3 week wait) (today), two blokes jumped out of the van (nice & early too as VM said between 1pm and 6pm and this was only 12.15!) and after rubbing their chins found the nearest cable point adjacent to next doors house.
Oh , 'you'll need next doors permission to fit it to their wall on the outside' they say.
Ah: the entire streets facias are listed and most are rented, so thats a no-go then. Bl**dy wonderful: I take a day off work and wait in for a clowns outfit that know nothing about the local restrictions.

I've now signed up to sky, whilst slower they are at least a company that CAN provide what they charge for.

stop press: after repeated promises from sky NO THEY CAN'T provide what they charge for: they made repeated empty promises about the BB install and then when I cancelled gave me a full refund which was nice INCLUDING the installation fee (or so the lady on the 31st December said), they then took a further £35.50 from my bank today which they seem unable to refund immediately. bah. Oh: and the email address 'Jeremy darroch' goes straight to their complaints department and not the man himself! well peed off now, off to the bank to make sure the thieves don't take any more once the snow has cleared and then to trading standards.

I signed up to BT, which whilst not the greatest VFM at least does what it says!

I got 0.256MB per sec. I do use newsgroups, which newsgroup should I go to?

Now the important question really is..... Is that game free to play? What files do I need and website/server do I play from? << Only interested if it is free to play, like Enemy Territory: Wolfstein (do you know this one)?

They hoped you would be in. They did the same with me, only with me I was working nights and I value my sleep, and was really annoyed that they had knocked my door an hour before they were supposed to. I told them they'll have to wait, shut the door and opened it again at 1pm.
and after rubbing their chins found the nearest cable point adjacent to next doors house.

In my street when they laid the cable they put a junction box outside every house - in the pavement. And luckily when I had mine installed (phone line 10 years ago) i.e. not the two cowboys who woke me up early to install a BB modem - they didn't actually install anything just gave me the modem and screwed a length of co-axe cable to the wall box which was already installed. and I made them wait an hour to do that :D (I didn't know that was all they were going to have to do)...... Anyway, when I had the phone line only installed the fitters were very sensible and said
"we're supposed to put this grey plastic box on the outside of your house, but you don't want that do you? Because it is an ugly empty box that serves no purpose" I said "ok go for it" and they just pushed the cable through the wall with a bit of silicone sealant job done, no plastic grey box on my house. Since then every other house in the street have had the grey plastic boxes fitted which do look ugly, serve no purpose and half of them are broken and hanging open with the wires exposed.

I was offered £18pm for the Phone & BB, only 50p month less than I am paying now. Someone else I think was allowed to stay at £17.50 a little further back in the thread. I doubt you'll get it cheaper than this
