  • Andy, in effect, yes. Primarily because of the 12 month up front line rental. During the conversation, I did say "so I can ring up and try again for a free contract when the rental is due"? The lady said, I could have another go and renew it at the same time, or leave it to go back to monthly but I could always ring back in about 8 months and try it on again as she thought I'd got the cheek to go for it. Mind you, she may have left a note on my records, something like "Expect a call in August, tell him the answers no! I just went into it with a smile on my face thinking, anything gained is better than a smack in the gob. Its true what they say, when you speak, people can see your smile from the other end of the phone.

Are you now in 12 month minimum term contracts ?

We are in the same contract as before, but a new 12 month minimum term has been added for the new offer.

Was going to be on £86.17 a month after price rise for TV XL, Talk unlimited and 30 meg b-band with the old vm box plugged in upstairs. (£1034.04 anual) Phoned and asked directly for retentions and had an enjoyable and friendly bit of fun, trying to get Virgin to send me money for using their service. Plenty of chutzpah. Blamed it all on Richard, needing the extra money for Grecian 2000. The lady that I was talking to said she had enjoyed the banter. I paid the rental up front £164 and the new bill is £55.00 a month with everything the same except b-band which is bumped up to 100 meg (£824.00 anual). This gives a £210 saving, threefold b-band boost and £5.70 credit from the new contracts overlap with the old one. There is only downside. I f I am ever up Gateshead way, apparently I owe the lady a pint and a bouquet of flowers.

Sorry, but you should never need to pay line rental upfront if you are a big average spend customer.

Going through with the cancellation and waiting for the call back will see you get the line rental free for the year (I'm on my second year of free line rental now).

Inbound retentions will always be nice to you if you are nice to them, they are there to retain you, with targets. So they make you believe they are being nice (the whole 'let me just check with a manager' hold moments are quite frankly stalling tactics).

Each to there own though - Wouldn't personally have dropped the XL TV.

Don't think its just Freeview i can't see Eurosport on Freeview.Anyway iv'e had xl tv since it started.I just don't think its worth the extra £19 a month it was going to cost.I also have a Tivo box in with my deal.

Phoned to cancel and have been offered the following for £35 + Line rental (£53/m inc)

    200MB BB
    M+ TV
    Weekend Calls

Will pay line rental upfront so will be a bit cheaper but wonder if I can do better?

Go through with the cancellation, wait for the call back.

No one should do a deal with the retentions team you call!

I have been with Virgin NTL for past 14 years and in the past year been paying £28.50 for line rental and 50mb b/band although do not appear to get anywhere close to this speed. The new payment increase takes this to over £30. when I spoke with Virgin they offered to cancel increase in Feb and reduce the monthly overall payment to £26 pm including line rental saver. I see on the forum a number of people seem to secure the package I have for around £18.50pm. Does this include weekend calls and how are people actually getting this price?

Does this include line rental? What is yours going up to? If line rental is included then it is great - still worth contacting retentions and see what is achievable as Sky will likely cost more in your circumstances?
