Ive just switched from Virgin to Sky on that £6 for the year deal.

Like yourself I'll try them both and see how 'bad' the Sky speed is whilst I am in my notice period with Virgin.

I only have Phone/BB50 and Im paying £30 a month (to go up £3 in August). The phone never gets used and I'm out the house 5 days a week (10 hr work days) so I just cant justify it anymore, nor do I need it.

When I cancelled they offered me a £5 reduction and a 12 month contract (which is almost cancelled out when it goes up £3 next month). I think that works out better for Virgin than it does for me. So lets see what Sky is like.

@Andy - actually thats not a bad shout.....

So potentially, I can also run both for the remainder of the VM 30 day cancellation period and see how Sky perform. If Sky is really poor, its not like I lost a huge amount as its only an *extra* cost of £6 max for the year.

Then if still within the 30 days i can reverse the cancellation and I'm really only about £6 or so worse off than I am currently (minus postage for the Sky Hub)

I guess the trigger will be VM picking up on the transfer of the phone line.....and the subsequent increase in monthly package if I did decide to stay.

    Worth thinking about - thanks!

You will have to be quick, as I think it takes sky 2 weeks to install.

I think the Sky stuff comes down the BT cables. But I assume you are going to ask for the Tel No to be transfered over.
  • Yer - just signed up and have time to evaluate for the '10 day optimising of the line' prior to the expiry of the cancellation. I should be at home a fair amount to give it a bashing to see what it can do - and I'm keeping my existing cable/router setup for VM as backup just in case... I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks for the heads up everyone!

So - update from yesterday - had Sky BB installed. Openreach engineer stayed whilst i did speed check etc. - I'm getting 17Mbps right now (on Virgin only getting 20Mbps).

I do appreciate its day 1 but no dropouts yet, performance is good, Netflix/Amazon no difference.

Only slight noticeable difference is downloading files - this is only a few seconds though. Fingers crossed this continues :) Here's hoping.

put my request to cancel virgin last monday the 29th june

got a call today with the offer of 50mb broadband line rental and weekend calls for 19.49 i probably could have got abit more knocked off but saves me having to wait for phone calls.

Virgin broadband is much better than sky and perhaps in a years time they can offer me a deal on tv once my sky tv deal has ended.

Is it possible to get any money off while still in contract? Last time I went through retentions I got a 6 month discount on something or other, now the 6 months are up, the bill has obviously gone up. Do I have to wait until the 12 month contract is up?

Was out of contract and discount was coming to an end so I rang the retentions team to see what they can do for me... but they were giving me a deal that was more than what i was paying for (while the discount was still on)! i argued that its not good enough and have been with them since they were NTL and also there are cheaper deals for new customers....but was told that the best they can do is match the current price i would be on with the discount!

Regardless to say i have asked to cancel everything... Have people actually had any luck with the outbound retentions team and how long was it after you cancelled that they called?
  • Exactly the same happened and we cancelled. 10 days later, they rang with a good offer but we still rejected it and 1 day later they came back with a better offer and we accepted. So if you can stand it, wait...
