I accepted the deal but when I got home, there was a message from the same agent who offered me the deal, to say he had made a mistake and he is unable to honour it.

As I accepted the deal on the phone, is that not a verbal contract and do they have the right to cancel?

I'd appreciate anyone's comments on this.

    Thank you

Phone up and make a complaint and ask them to listen to the call. Make the point as above that if you verbally agreed to a contract and then decided shortly afterwards that you didn't want it - would they allow you to cancel the newly agreed contract?

Decide what you want, price up what the best offer you can get from Sky or any combination of other suppliers, then take it to Virgin and tell them you have been offered x for £y, so you want to cancel. They will then put you through to retentions. depending on how convincing you are, they may or may not agree to match your offer if you stay for a further year with them.

  • Just renegotiated with Virgin. 50mb/s broadband for £21.50pm on a 12 month contract, but with the £7 monthly discount being applied for a duration of 18 months (normal price £28.50pm).

This is for broadband only. I don't have a fixed line telephone, as you don't need one with Virgin.
But you still pay line rental for the phone.

Have been negotiating with Virgin over the last few days and posting updates in the main Virgin price thread but thought I'd include here in case it helps anyone else.

    Currently have

    30Mb BB
    TV M
    Phone anytime
    Multitalk 250 - 0845 and mobiles
have been paying £30/m although took line rental saver on top so was slightly less overall

Was told it was going up to nearly £50 after price rise and loss of discounts.

    Current offer:
BB 50Mb (free supercharge upgrade already offered)
    TV M
    Phone - anytime calls
Multi-talk 1000 - replacement for existing add-on just with more minutes
    6 months Netflix
£30 per month including line rental.

Just agreed this deal (posted in price rise thread too):

    Deal is :

    TV M
    BB 50Mb
    Phone - anytime calls with multi-talk 1000
    Caller ID
    6 months Netflix
£30 per month including line rental and includes price rise due next month. Asked about line rental saver but was told I couldn't have that as technically they have given me free line rental for the contract.

    12 Month contract

Hope that helps someone else with their negotiations :)

Just rang and cancelled mine. They gave me a deal 6 months back and told me it would be that price for 12 months there just liars. They just offered to credit my account the £4.69 a month for the rest of the contract but i said no cancel.I'll see what retentions come back with.
  • Just to let everyone know how it all went.

I spoke to an agent the following Monday and they were uncertain what had happened. It appears the original agent had PC problems, however I did not get the original offer.

It was going to work out at £82 per month for 100mb broadband, TV XL, Sky Sports and Movies, plus the HD pack. In the end, I managed to get the same deal, apart from increasing the broadband package to 152mb and it works out at £83 per month. It covers the price rise too and is for 12 months.

I think all in all, it is a fair deal. I might be wrong though.

After my monthly bill went to £37.82 for basic fibre broadband and phone I called VM. Deal I was offered I was satisfied with.
    12 month contract.

    144 up front line rental
    £7.50 a month broadband.
    So £19.50 a month equivalent.

I have broadband only (100mb). I put my notice in earlier this month and have just agreed to sign up for another 12 months at £15pm, averaged out (£18 a month with two months credit at the start (£36) = £15pm....well under half the advertised rate of £33.50pm).

I'm happy with that. Credit to the retentions guy who went the extra mile to keep me. He was also very friendly and polite throughout.

AFAIK there are 3 levels of people you can speak to. The retentions team (3rd level) that calls you back when you put in your notice have the most power in terms of offers, discounts, bill credits, etc. There seems no way of getting through to these people if you ring up, they contact you if you put in a cancellation request. The 2nd level people (customer relations) are those you first get put through to when you phone up and ask to cancel. They can offer you a bit of a discount but not as much as retentions and they cannot connect you to retentions as far as I can tell.
