Your core cost isn't your best bargaining chip, its the equipment.

I would push for a free Tivo and keep the V+ for another room and pay the same..
  • They sed if i take phone line again then they can do me a better deal.
  • Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. Reading others' experiences and tips helped me gather the knowledge and courage to negotiate hard with VM.
So, thought I'd add my deal to the mix, in the hope that someone finds it useful:-

    Current package: £37.60
    TV M (V+)
    Phone talk weekends
    20 meg broadband

    New deal:
New Tivo box (5.95 installation down from £49) - M
move old V+ box to bedroom - M
    Talk Anytime plus 150 minutes/month to mobiles/0845/0870
    New super hub
    30 meg broadband
pay line rental upfront £120 (saving £60/year)
    Monthly DD £15.01
    works out £25/month
    12 month contract

The biggest hurdle was getting use of the second box for £0. They wanted £6.50/month
Finally agreed (3rd call from retentions) but had to discount it in a strange way: 6 months free. £39 credit. then the 2nd 6months charged at £6.50/month.

Hope this helps! You need to research other providers and tell VM their rivals are offering the same service but with an added sweetener e.g. Sky's £100 M&S vouchers ... good luck guys.
I'm a very happy bunny with my deal!
Ageing is inevitable - maturing is optional :p
  • Well virgin have been today and changed the main cable all the way from main box to the house.. Time will tell if the problems are sorted but the picture is better so obv a prob!! Surely i have a case now. Guy who rang last night said if i want to cancel contract i can for free so they admitting fault i guess..

Well got my deal fit today i like what the tivo can do but don't like the layout as much as the v+ box,I suppose i'll get used to it,Miss the extra channels i had with xl but when i think of the £33 a month i'm saving its not too bad,The 30mb is plenty really.Oh i also got a 2p reduction its £14-99p not £15-01p a month,Plus the upfront phone price.

Nuts, Atm I'm paying £77 for Talk evenings & weekends, 20Meg broadband, XL TV & movies.

Been with them for over 10 years now, and saw the half price Sky offer and thought I might be able to negotiate a change on my services. Nope, wouldn't even throw in the Sky Sports without me paying £9 extra (that's £2 more than the Sky Movies & Sports bundle at £32.75)

Have to say, looking serious now at moving from Virgins apparent lack of loyalty discounts.
  • Honestly with regards to retentions deals you just need to ask, there is crazy deals at the moment. The only place you will get the most competitive deal with virgin is via the retentions team.

Make sure to drive a hard bargain and you will get the package you want.

Work with the agent and not against them.

Talking from experience - retentions agent.

Is there a best time of month to call to negotiate, or is that a myth - monthly /quarterly retention targets etc?

  • Well after they have changed all cables from main box round cnr from us all way to house, all cables in house, the box and the card we now have had a few days with no stuttering or hanging.. But even more concerning is the difference in picture quality.. Its amazing now..
But, having spoken to virgin they say they glad its sorted but wont be re imbursing us anything or adjusting package price. This has been going on for about 2 yrs!! Surely theres an avenue i can go down with this? Any ideas pls??
