My final update! Rang Sky to cancel who confirmed there's a £25 charge for not having a phone line. She went away and came back and said they could refund that charge for me if the installer mentions it. Thought about it but with the credit Virgin were offering I'd be paying £42 a month with them, and with Sky it'd be £38 so not too much of a difference really (and I'd still have a phoneline...)
So said no just go ahead and cancel, they came back again with a £50 credit to my account and to refund the £25 charge if I receive it (and this is on the top of the 50% off Sky TV code I used to sign up). Couldn't really refuse that, so now staying with Virgin for my broadband and going to Sky for TV, works out at £34 a month with that credit Sky are giving me.

all worked out well in the end, but whatever you do, get what Sky have offered in writing too many people on here have signed up on a promise, which doesn't materialise and then when you tell them who you spoke to and when they either don't work there or the that call 'wasn't recorded'.

You dont need a phone line with Sky.

There is an option of paying a one-off fee of £25 to avoid the contractual requirement to connect your Sky box to a phone line.

  • I am paying £24 .55 per month BB L TV. telephone with free weekend calls! this is half price for full term of contract and £7,84 pm goodwill/loyalty benefit! I had cancelled the BB and TV the year before as I was not getting the service I had paid for ! and had started a legal action against them re refunding the price of my BB for the previous 4 years ! basically as long as I dont downgrade I will receive the same discount as long as I stay with Virgin !! I always warn them that I am recording the call so they now know I do NOT trust them and I genuinely do record them!!

    Thanks for that info.
How does it work if you want to watch catch-up or BBC iplayer though or are those services unavailable without having a phone line connected ?

You get those through your internet. They told me yesterday they only need a phone connection incase you wish to purchase anything from the box office. They scan your box every so often to check for these charges.

You can pay the £25 fee but they're going to waiver it for me.

How though as the internet (if it's ADSL) requires a phone line and the phone rental to be paid before you add on the ADSL internet monthly fee.
AFAIK the only exception is Virgin Media who can provide BB internet without the need for a phone line. ( no real cost advantage though).

If it's only the Sky box with no active phone line, then it will just be a TV service similar to Freesat albeit with any extra Sky channels you've subscibed to.

    Well, Got the call.

    And really quite disappointed.

Very little on offer, in the end I took staying as I am (with the increase in February going on) as anything better than I am on was an extreme increase in price)

So, ended up on a 12 month contract with a month free.

I accepted and asked for a copy of the contract, I can still change my mind - going to give Sky a proper close look now - must admit, Virgin has got the whole retention approach completely wrong.

Yeah it was just words over the phone!

Will wait and see what happens in a year but as the offer I've been made is reasonable I don't mind waiting til the 18-month BB contract runs out. If at the end of the contract they try to put it up I'll use the same method as before and if they don't buy it they've lost a customer. But that's thinking ahead too far, I'll just enjoy the next 12 months reduction/increased service for now

There is a cost advantage to me this time for having broadband with Virgin without a phoneline that I don't want or need, and getting TV from Sky.

Not sure what you mean by a sky box without a phoneline is similar to freesat?
