    Thanks for your reply.
I'm connected through a standalone modem. I'm pretty sure VM made a cockup.
I've been on 2mb and I phoned to cancel so they offered my 4mb,which they said it'll automatically go to 10mb, for £14. But every few months they start charging me £22 or £32 without any notice. When I phone they say it's a mistake and they start charging me £14!
Now they are saying my 12 months deal of £14 run out so I decided to cancel.
I thought I could get 8mb with Tiscali for 14.99 which will include an £11 line rental.
I'm pretty sure that they never upgraded me to 4mb nor to 10mb and that I've been always on 2mb but they still charged me for 10mb speed!

I take it you rebooted the modem when the upgrade from 4Mbit to 10Mbit happened? Everyone was upgraded from 4Mbit to 10Mbit, you did need to reboot the modem and you could check in the modem config pages which config file you have.

It might be your UBR is over-utilised and awaiting a fix.

Note as Tiscali is ADSL then you'll unlikely to get anywhere near 8Mbit.

When cable is working properly you do get your paid for speed, just seems for some reason there has been problems with your service.

Wondering if anyone can help me out, called VM today to try and get a better deal, and was basically told that I could get it £7 cheaper by reducing my BB services down to Medium - not really what I had in mind :(

Currently paying £37 (paper billing) for:

    Telephone line rental £11
Talk anywhere 200 £9 (I really like this as it gives us 200 free minutes of calls any time to landlines, mobiles, international and 08 numbers)
Phone & BB bundle saving -£8
    TV size M £0
    BB size L £25

BB L is supposed to be 10meg here but speedtest only ever comes back at just about 2.5meg:

On telling the Woman that I thought I could get a better deal else where she started saying that I wouldn't get as good speeds on ADSL as so many companies use the phone line and it would be shared, how I would have to pay for on demand services if I went to BT with Vision blah blah

So I said I'd have a think about what she said and go back and compare again. Need some ammunition to fire when I call back.

So can anyone please advise what my next step should be or point me in the direction of a better deal to be had out there.

    Thank you!
Trying to make a better life.... If you need me you'll find me at the allotment.

Those speeds look like you have been STM'd (Traffic managed for downloading too much during STM periods.

On the 10Mbit service you get only 25% of your speed for 5 hours if you download too much during the STM hours.

For most people the Talk Anywhere tariff is usually poor value for money (plus you aren't really getting 'free' calls, you are paying £9 on top of the £11 line rental for them) - It does look slightly better on cable if you compare what cable usually charge for calls to mobiles, international and 08 numbers - they are a rip off, they are the dearest around, plus you waste minutes when you call landlines. You could either opt for another standard type tariff and then use other call providers such as Call 18185 for calls to mobiles, international, 08 numbers (though via cable not as cheap as if via a BT line) or you could keep the anytime 200 and not call 01, 02 or 03 numbers with VM, but use Call 18185 as they charge 1p/min, so you wouldn't waste your VM minutes to such numbers.

Out of the blue, my bill has gone up this month. I used to get Talk Unlimited for free, but they're now charging me  :

    Telephone Line Rental £11.00
    Talk Unlimited £7.95
    Phone, TV & B B Bundle Saving £-9.50
    T V Size: L £11.50
    V+ Box £5.00
    Broadband Size: X L £37.00
    B B X L For Price Of B B L Bonus £-12.00
    Total: £50.95

    I also get:
    E Bill Discount £-1.00
Customer Promotional Credit £-1.00 (Not too sure what this is.)

I want to call them up and find out what they're playing at, but I don't want to jeopardise the package if the general opinion is that it's ok, even paying for unlimited calls. Could I do better?

Edit: I've just dug out last November's bill (2007) and it looks like that's when my deal of free talk unlimited and XL BB for the price of L BB began. So, 12 months later they remove the talk unlimited, but not the BB. Hmm. Concerned if I call to query/renegotiate they might remove the BB discount too.

The same happened to me earlier this year. They said that the offer was only for 1 year from when I started my contract, when did you sign up? Oct/Nov last year?

Thinking of signing up for the triple XL promotion tv,bb,phone £49 first 6 months then £56 including line rental.
    http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websales/product.do?id=15163
This would incur £75 installation charge £20 for wireless usb adaptor £20 wireless laptop card but free wireless router.

Is this a good offer? is it worth haggling at this price? never had digital tv before got analogue tv 2mb bb basic phone costing me about £50 with calls so I will be better off service wise.

In no contract so I could threaten to leave.

    Thanks
