Virgin Media Retention thread

I'm moving, but to a house that is nearby and also has Virgin Media Cable, so hopefully easy. But, of course the price has jumped recently.
I'm paying £37.90 for:
TV M (45 Channels)
Phone XL ( Unlimited calls to UK landlines all day, every day)
Broadband L (10 mb)
Virgin phone line
Phone extras
Voicemail Plus
TV extras
V HD Box - HD ready
Phone Line Rental - £13.90
Bundles - £24
Total: £37.90
When chappie called up to confirm the move (and charge £10 for the move??) I said i'm not happy with the deal. He offered a £5 reduction for 6 months, then revert to normal.
I'm going to start looking now at what I could get elsewhere. I would want to get this for £25 (fair?) not on a temporary deal. I'm not too concerned about improving my package, don't even know what Tivo is, but if they chucked that in and Sky Sports I would help.
So, what would be fair? Is £25 too high? Or too low?
You have to be realistic - you're paying a old deal price. What you need to do is calculate your current deal at current prices and work your discount off that, NOT off your existing deal.
There is no way they will 'chuck in TiVO or Sky Sports' - the former is a £49.99 activation and £3 monthly fee while the latter is £22.50 on its own...
Your current package is £43.95 at today's prices - therefore getting £5 off your £37.90 is likely to be pretty much all you can expect 0 you might get a few quid more, but I know of no way for them to discount you down to £25 a month (please remember the line rental alone is £13.90 a month!)0 -

I told them it wasn't cheap enough and I was looking to go to Talktalk, they then called me on Tuesday and after some backing and forward on deals they offered me the same package for £17 which I accepted so give them a call and see what they can do.
With regards to your broadband speeds how are you testing them? I tend to use http://www.speedtest.net/ which gives me accurate figures.
i also use that site usually 3 times during the day to get a base rate
different times of the day result in different speeds.
i believe that i cant cancel due to them renewing the contract when they changed my M broadband to L broadband and supposed to have reduced my bill by £5, funny how it went from £34 to £29 back to £34 after 1 month.
just been on virginmedia site and logged into my account, seems my M broadband is still M and my telephone is XL
weird goings on if i click on the icon to change my services, it says I got L broadband and XL telephone, cant have both M and L for broadband,0 -

Thanks
I was partly in jest about Sky Sports (= divorce, besides Barnet FC isn't on Sky enough to justify it, and no ashes coming up soon!), and tivo box - I don't actually need it.
But, what seemed like the logical thing is to have a look at other providers. I mean, I like Virgin and their broadband speeds (which is fairly low), but the TV channels we use are on Freeview anyway (box = £20), so what am I actually utilising it for?
Basically I need Line Rental & 10mb Broadband, Basic Phone Inclusions + Usual channels.
I make Talk Talk (via Uswitch) £15.85 for 9 months then £19.10 afterwards. No TV = must buy Freeview.
BT (TV M £4, Line Rental £13.90, Broadband 20MB + Inclusive Calls £16) = Total £33.90, but 4 months free Broadband + Calls saving £64.
Sky (never had before - Entertainment Pack 1 (£19.50), Line Rental (£12.25) free Sky+ box, free install) = £31.75 + £10 one off Line Rental Set up (+ £25 M&S Voucher!).
Plus Net: £21.98 per month (no tv)
Post Office: £26.05 per month (no tv)
So, using this post as a sandbox (sorry, but if i'm hopelessly wrong, someone can correct me!), if I look at prices over a year, budgeting £25 for a Freeview Box...
Min requirements: 10MB broadband, Line Rental, Weekend/Eve Landline Calls, More than 5 TV channels.
Price over a year:
Plusnet: £288.76
Post Office: £337.60
BT: £342.80
SKY: £391
Virgin: £434.80 (they want to charge me £10 to move)
I havn't seen any issue with keeping my number. And i've tried damn hard to compare like with like (Sky is giving me far more money than channels than I need, and both me & other half are on Virgin Mobile so get free calls to our mobiles from home on them).
But at the moment Virgin are lagging a long way behind. I'll give them a few days, the cancellation is in. But for a basic package it seems i'd be paying a lot more for... ??0 -

I've cut everything else out for a second - and the main reason being is your first requirement.
Before you do anything else go here http://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker
And check what you can get speedwise - as PlusNet, Post Office, BT and Sky will all have the same maximum speed - I suspect you will be looking at 3-5mb at best - and it is just that, the best you will be expected to get.
I agree with you about the TV, getting a freeview box is the cheapest way if TV is not important, so get one and then do a quote for Virgin on phone and broadband and see what that comes out at0 -

You are not going to switch every 12 months, aren't you?
Besides you are moving - sod their offer and just terminate the contract. Then ask your partner to register as a new customer at new place; register online via cashback site and get all discounts for new customers: free installation, 6 months half price and whatever else they have.0 -
Hi
I am not on any contract and am on the same offer/Package for over 2 years or so. I currently pay £56 inclusive of line rental for
XL TV
L Broadband
M Phone-talk evening and weekends
1 V plus HD Box
1 standard box
I would like to add Sky Sports but not keen on adding cost to current package cost. Is my current deal reasonable or should I try and haggle it down?
Thanks0 -
You're downloading from a news server, during the day, in the periods where they will restrcit your speed to avoid network saturation issues and you are complaining?
You're £32.33 would include £12.50 line rental, so that takes you to £20, minus £9 for your calls leaves £11 for your 10mb internet connection.
Try and get that speed elsewhere for less - I think you just need to learn when to you use your connection to maximise your usability of the speed.
Downloading on VM after 12 midnight would do your opnion of the service a great deal of good...
wrong, i try not to download during the day if i can help it, thats when i view webpages and decide what updates to programs i need and add them to my download manager.
I download via the newserver during the night usually from midnight - 10am ,and preferably before 10am.
another fact, the 2mb download limit they seem to have put me on and i've checked this as i'm still awake at 2am in the morning seems to last at least till 2am, when the same program still says 1.6mbps,
heres how i work out my day.
10am-10pm browsing the web, talking to my friends in america via yahoo chat, checking emails, jobsearching, coming on here,
10pm downloading the newserver/group lists to find out whats available for download.
midnight - 10am above downloads unless theres nothing i want.
and considering even after 5 days of not using my computer going back to march for this due to being in hospital for 2 days, and not wanting to even turn the computer on, went in on a thursday, didnt turn my computer on till the following tuesday, and then when i did turn it on yes during the day, mainly to check emails, talk to friends, i download a couple of files, mainly malwarebytes defs update 6mb and found out my speed was still slow.
it was weird when they reduced my speed after midnight when i would actually expect it to be the best time to download.0 -
I would be getting some bandwidth monitoring software in place to see whats being used and where. I would also speak to Virgin about it (in a non 'you suck' sort of attitude) and provide the logs from your bandwidth usage to prove there is a problem with your setup and speed.
Again, I standby the fact that no matter what you use it for, for the price you are paying you simply can't find a 10mb connection for the same or less.0 -
Well, my mum has been on VIP20 for about 3 years and called to see what they could offer as she has been offered Sky for half price for 12 months (TV only) and they offered nothing, not even to match the new customer VIP50 offer. Looks like she will be getting Sky now!0
