i am close to the hub and can get in and around 8mb

If you are close to the exchange and using an LLU operator you should get far more than 8Mb.
but virgin say that it will be capped at 40gb download limit with sky.

That's the Connect package which I wouldn't touch. Their LLU package is unlimited. Are you able to get Sky LLU or any other LLU provider for that matter?

    What would your exchange be?

Go to samknows (http://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker) and put in your phone number, it will tell you which companies are available to you. So far as I am aware, there are LLU available as I have friends in NI who had TalkTalk and switched to the Post Office for line and broadband.

Check out Samknows for whatever exchange it is.

For example Sky LLU in Northern Ireland is available at the following exchanges.

He only has a cable line from what I can gather so would need to know the exchange name.

... or you can put in your postcode on Sam Knows and get an indication of what is available at your nearest exchange.

i was having a look today the BT line at the front of the house has been cut just before it goes through the wall and i think the only way that could happen is when the virgin media guy was out putting a line upstairs he has cut it.
i checked sam knows and it says i can get 10 - 20mb from sky only problem now is i will have to pay to get a new line installed and last time i looked it was over £120.
by the way thanks for the help

Have you tried asking Sky what it would cost to install a line?

I have just spoken to Virgin, (I am on ADSL @ the moment, £10. pm, unlimited BB, evening & w/e calls. Line rental to BT @ £12.04 pm, total £22.04 pm).

Virgin have offered me line rental, evening & w/e calls, unlimited BB @ £15. pm for 6 months, then call again for renewal at same rates.

Or same as above but with calls unlimited for £17. pm for 6 months.

    I can have both above deals for 12 months @ £17.05, & £19.55 respectively.

Cannot use override numbers, but was told that within the next couple of months 0845 & 0870 numbers are to be included in all of their packages!

BT can only do a similar package for £22.35 a month.

    Better the devil you know?
