Virgin Media Retention thread

You phone up and say you would like to cancel. They may offer you a deal then - if it's any good accept it. If not organise your cancellation date.
Then wait until they phone you and see how much they will give you as a discount if you don't leave.
Thanks I kind of meant what the time scales were.
I'm giving 30 days notice, so presumably I can change my mind any time within those 30 days (i.e. if things go wrong and they don't phone me back)
Presumably it would be more effective if I pretend to be transferring to O2 (i'd be fairly happy to do that anyway, but rather not bother). How would that work?0 -

Sorry. When I cancelled I got my first phone call from retentions 2 days later - it may even have been the next day but I didn't check the phone that day. Missed them the first time they called but they called again the next day and then the next. I'd sorted it out within 5 days of my cancellation phone call.I'm giving 30 days notice, so presumably I can change my mind any time within those 30 days (i.e. if things go wrong and they don't phone me back)
I expect you can.Presumably it would be more effective if I pretend to be transferring to O2 (i'd be fairly happy to do that anyway, but rather not bother). How would that work?
If it's BB yes you can say that. If it's phone then no as you need a BT line.0 -
Hi, just needing some advice please.....
I've just realised we've been with Virgin Media for just over 12 months now, and our monthly bill is always over £40
Really want to cut this down as much as possible, and I'm wondering how to go about it? I've looked at TalkTalk, and I can get more for almost £15 less per month! This includes free Anytime calls (only get evening and weekend ones with VM), and much better broadband. We don't make many calls, but they seem to cost a lot with VM.
Do I switch to TalkTalk, or see what I can get out of VM? If I go down the route of trying to get a better deal, how would I do this (sorry if I sound stupid here). And what should I aim for?
Thanks in advance for any help0 -
Work out what you want - that's reasonable, e.g. if you want Anytime calls for the price you're paying for E&W calls, faster broadband, etc.. Or work out how much less you're willing to pay for what you're already getting.
Make sure it's reasonable. Also, make sure you would actually be prepared to go elsewhere for a similar priced deal.
Then you phone up VM, and politely, say that you've seen better deals elsewhere for XYZ at £xx per month and would they consider improving your current deal for you to stay with them?
See what they'll offer you. If you haven't seen it, there is a dedicated thread on VM retention deals http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=10218850 -
Thanks - looked at the thread just now (how I didn't see it, I don't know!).
Just called them, explained about better deal etc, she said she could reduce it to £19.99 p/m - I said that sounded good, she was a bit shocked I was "easily pleased". Then realised that the TalkTalk deal is £1.51 less, and I would get free evening calls too (which I don't already get with VM).
She then got all arsey with me and said I would get a maximum of 2.1 meg BB from TalkTalk (out of the 8 Meg they provide) and would have to pay over £150 connection fee to BT as well, plus be tied into an 18 month contract. I pointed out that there would be no connection fee, as it's free as part of the deal. She then said I would get charged loads for going over the download limit on TT. I pointed out we download nothing and our usage isn't extreme anyway. Cue her getting more arsey with me, at which point (when she asked) I said yes I will cancel.
So it's sorted for the 25th of March. Question - should I expect a call from retentions in the meantime or should I just go ahead and switch? Thanks in advance.....0 -
Blimey... I wasn't expecting that. I guess they must just get more people trying it on nowadays.
Weird though that she was shocked you were easily pleased and then got annoyed when you weren't!
Oh well, as long as you're happy moving to TalkTalk. You're happy to move right? Otherwise, you could always call them back and try speaking to someone else.
I don't know if VM will get back to you again or not - does it say anything like that in the VM Retentions thread? I'd check there and maybe post there too.
I wouldn't of thought so though, normally the retentions comes between you saying you want to cancel and VM logging it as a cancellation.0 -

I cancelled Virgin on 17th January as they couldn't offer me anywhere near what I could get with O2 - I had phoned through to the cancellations department so should have been retentions. Cancelllation was booked for 17th February.
Two days later I got the first phone call from them to see why i was leaving and what they could do.0 -
Thank you both for that info!! Tbh, I would rather stay, but couldn't believe her attitude and some of the porkies! I hope they do call, and see if I can get a slightly better deal.0
