Just called NTL to negotiate my bill down based on a comparison with Sky. First person I spoke to was a bit sniffy and wanted to know exactly what channels were being offered so after a bit of research on the sky site I was able to phone them back with sky mix (2 choices variety and family) for £15 per month plus 16 meg broaqdband £10 per month plus cost of BT £11 per month (total £36 pm) more or less replicating my NTL package which was £55.49. Result NTL gave me a discount to match the alternative (actually 2p per month cheaper) plus backdated the discount a couple of months!
You do need to be able to tell them wich channels you would get and exactly what it would cost but so long as you sound convincing they seem to be able to do quite well.
Wouldn't have tried it without the encouragement etc here so thanks!!!

Thought you would all like to know that after applying the discounts in November my December bill came in today and there are no discounts - so some 18.50 more expensive once again. Obviously I expect them to fix it but when I call them on Monday but it just goes to show you absolutely must check - perhaps I actually will move.

All this cost-cutting is fine and dandy but I have my suspicions that you're being taken for a ride.
Both my mate (living on the same street) and I have been using the NTL 10mb connection for 12 months now (£35/month) with no other NTL stuff, just that BB package. We've both been impressed with speed and reliability - I've yet to see mine drop below 7mb and as I do a speed test now it's 9.4mb so no complaints there. However, my mate heard about this cost cutting thing if you phone them up and moan and did just that. End result was that they cut his bill by a tenner per month for 3 months whilst still being on the 10mb service. About a week later he noticed a significant reduction in his download speeds and did a speed test to find out. Guess what? Down to 3.6mb! He belled me up and asked me what I was getting and it was 8.7mb! Like I say, we live in the same street and are on the same exchange so should be getting the same speed! He's since phoned them up to complain about it but they're not budging and insist his connection hasn't be altered and basically should be grateful he's saving £30 over 3 months.
Obviously neither of us can prove that his connection hasn't be altered but it seems too coincidental to ignore to me. I'm a firm believer in that you get what you pay for so I shall be sticking to my excellent £35/month service which DOES give me what it says on the tin.
Something to bear in mind anyway folks.

Was on BB for 17.99 plus phone.
Went for the "3 for £30" and noticed that I was being charged for calls I shouldn't have been.
Rang and complained (freephone 0800 0529 403) and the nice Coventry lass reduced my bill, reimbursed the calls, increased to 4 mb BB, "unlimited" phone (which ISN'T - oops!) and upgraded from Base to Family pack for 3 months.
That ran out on Monday. Rang on Friday (freephone now goes through to Geordie land and only 9am - 5pm) and was promised would ring back on Tuesday - didn't.
Rang today armed with all the figures. Current would start costing me £60.99.
Mentioned TalkTalk and Sky. Now have 4mb BB, Family and Unlimited 24 for £40 for next 12 months.
Thanks, guys! It pays to talk!0 -
6 months ago I got my phone line rental down to £2.50 pm forever and my then 1meg broad band for £9.99 pm. (was £17.99). Broadband deal ran out this month rang disconections and they gave me the £9.99 deal straight away for another 6 months and he told me my 1 meg had been upgraded to 2 meg already which was news to me. when pushed he said it was up to 2meg connection as I commented I hadn't noticed any change.
They said that they couldn't do any more for the phone line rental as only one deal per product. but to be honest we hardly use the phone so I am not complaining. now it is rare our phone bill goes over £5 pm all in.
must say I only rang for discount 6 months ago because of this site and the info you have all posted so thank you every one for saving me some dosh! :T :j :T0 -
I have been with them for about 2 years on BB(£25)+ TV(£5)+Phone (£11), paying £40/mth.
Called today to get this reduced unfortunately they were quite happy to loose my custom , best offer was £35 /mth.
Would be grateful for any ideas.
Cheers.
ps
Not so sure about moving to Talk-talk as they have very bad reviews.0
