Is it the retentions dept that you speak to when you try to get a discount or just the customer services? I'd be interested to know how you go on because my daughters in a student house and they share the ntl broadband by wireless. The ntl tv is also in the property put in by previous tenents but they want it taken out. So we were wondering if they could still get a reduction on just the broadband, not sure what speed they have or if they rent a router too but they are paying full price at the moment for both I think
    Thanx

I`ve always found if you speak to customer services and say you want to cancel your subscription (they might try and offer you some deals but it`s usually best to turn them down), they will then put you through to the retention/cancellation dept (be prepared for a wait) who have the authority to give you a better offer.

    Best of luck

I receive an £8 per month rebate for the basic broadband, free family channels upgrade on the tv package with a £10 per month rebate too (I have to phone up every 6 to 10 months now to receive a lump sum for this). I started claiming discounts about 3 years ago as their service was so poor. Funnily enough the tv and broadband has been working well for months now ;)

    Good News for me!
My £9.99 per month broadband was due to run out with NTL this month and I faced having to pay them the standard £17.99pm.
But following this thread, I rang them this afternoon on their freephone number 0800 052 9403 & asked them to cancel my service. (10 minute wait)
They asked me why, I said it was cheaper with Talk Talk, the nice chap immediately said he will give me 6 more months at £9.99!! No hassle, no 'tied contract', no asking, nothing. And he said they are going to be having some new cheaper packages out in about 3 months time.
    I was well chuffed!
It really is that easy, call 'em and save!!

Bad news for me, In the same position, I did exactly the same, re TT and new Pipex offer.
Put through to Cs/ retentions , said they would "match" TT but did not, as NO intenational and only 2 M BB for £20.99 ( posh and snotty woman in CC/retentions who would not accept all TT offer was correct), on the basis that I would have to have phone line installed to get it. When asked if they would offer 2meg for £8.99 ( as some peeps have managed), I was told that they would only match bundles, and went on to end my service on 3rd Aug.

I've just written a letter now stating not happy with service and what happened with c/s, I'll see if they take notice of it.
All the companies I've tried you need a phone-line for, If you know how I can get cheaper bb then £17.99 without please post, thanks.
Well the update is I received a letter back from NTL stating that my letter had been passed on to be dealt with and I'd hear from them in 5 days, That was 2weeks ago, and still having the problem with bb, so not happy with them.

arranged to move my phone line (number) from ntl to bt. I did this 'cos we are moving so it only took a single call to BT. Ntl phone me 3 days later; they've heard from BT that we are going and wanted to know why. I said it was 'cos we were moving and I wanted caller ID (they don't do it in our area) and their broadband was too expensive (24.99 for 4meg). Straight away he said they could install broadband (free) the day we move for £12.50 a month for a year. Total saving is 12.50 x 12 =12.5*12= 150! That's without taking any other service from them in the new house!

As a result of the general themes of this website - ie haggle and push - I rang NTL to see what they would do about my broadband costs. The conversation went something like this:
ME: "Hi, I've had broadband from your for £17.99 for quite some time now, other people are doing the same for half the price, why should I stick with you?"
NTL: "Ok lets have a look, I can put you on a combined phone and broadband package giving you free calls all weekend for £24"
ME: "err that's £6 more why would I do that, I don't make that many calls"
NTL: "Actually you're paying £28 for your phone and broadband seperately, I'm saving you £4"
ME: "Ok, that's great, thank you but Bulldog are doing the same broadband for £9.75, I could be saving myself at least £8. I go back to my original question, why should I stay with NTL?"
NTL: "err well I can't do anything else"
ME: "Don't you have any offers, half price for so long or anything?"
NTL: "No we've got nothing at the moment, they do change regularly"
ME: "So I need to keep phoning back to see what you can do? I'm not sure why I shouldn't just leave you and go elsewhere"
NTL: "Just a moment...." <a moment passes> "...I can do you half price broadband for 6 months, that's £9.99"
ME: "Ok that sounds great, lets go for that"

So, I've changed package from £28 to £24 saving £4 per month and then they're giving me Broadband for £9.99 for 6 months saving me £8 a month.
That's a £12 a month saving off the £28 I was paying. If you do the maths the same as me that means I am paying £16 a month for both phone and broadband! Depends how you want to look at it, either £11 phone and £5 broadband or broadband for £16 and phone free - whatever way its a win! :-)

So now I've just got to remember to ring up in another 6 months and get them to extend it some more.

I highly reccommend this to everyone else, thanks to all the other MSE contributors for giving me confidence to have a go.

    Cheers
    Chris

:money: PS - I've also has £400 back from my bank after claiming unfair charges back -result.

My DH rang Telewest tonight to tell them that he was looking to change providers unless they could offer him something better. We currently pay £25 per month for 4meg. We now have 10 meg for £17.99 for 3 months going to £35 per month after. They said he could ring up in 3 months again and see what they can offer him then. The man did say though that he had offered this deal by mistake but had to honour it.

I'm a bit p****d off that he didn't ring sooner though. I have been nagging him for ages and he never got around to it!!! I tried but they wouldn't deal with me because i wasn't the account holder.

Do NTL do a wireless router modem thing? I've got the ordinary one but I saw an advert for AOL wireless broadband and thought I could ask for an upgrade with NTL if they do. Couldnt find anything on the site though does anyone know?
    Thanx
