I am sick and tired of eBay sellers who try to charge extra for "insurance" when what they really mean is recorded delivery, so it's very disappointing to see the Money Saving Expert making the same mistake.

Recorded delivery is not insurance! Paying extra for recorded delivery buys you no insurance whatsoever. Not a single penny!

All items sent first-class are automatically insured for up to the current value of 100 1st class stamps, i.e. thirty-six quid at the moment. You don't need to buy recorded delivery or any extras at all to get this cover: you sent it first-class, you're covered.

You will, however, need a proof-of-posting to make a claim. But, if it does go missing, don't do what the person early in this thread did and ask the intended recipient to pay. Why should they? They didn't lose it! No, you make a claim against the Royal Mail. They will perform a cursory investigation (i.e. they will ask the intended recipient to fill in a form), and then they will pay up.

The only use for recorded delivery is for documents which are intrinsically valueless but where you might need to prove they were delivered e.g. legal papers. For sending items of value, use 1st class if it's less than £36, otherwise Special Delivery. Recorded delivery simply doesn't enter into it.

n.b. lest anyone thinks that recorded delivery will get your item treated more carefully, it will not. Recorded delivery gets processed in exactly the same way as regular 1st and 2nd class, and is just as likely to get lost. The only difference is when the postie arrives at your doorstep and knocks for a signature (if you're lucky - I've had recorded delivery mail simply put through the letterbox with the rest of the post).

  • I'm sure someone can clear this up.

If i send a phone to Love2recycle is it just the phone I have to send? Do I have to send the charger? and what about other bits that would have been in the box.

The website doesn't say in the FAQ.

    Thanks
  • Warning about the info in the latest weekly MoneySaving email. It says :
"Extra £5 for old mobiles with special code. The code means one of the top paying old-mobile-buying firms, Love2recycle*, adds a fiver on top. Full info in the Updated Guide: Mobile Recycling"

If you click on the first link, it takes you straight to the Love2recycle site (in conjunction with MoneySupermarket.com). I entered details of my phones in here and entered the special voucher code, but it made no difference to the amount being shown. I went ahead anyway and then emailed Love2recycle. They have told me that for the voucher code to work, you have to REGISTER with them on the MoneySupermarket website first! But, this isn't stated anywhere, and it doesn't give you an error when you enter the code, it just doesn't have any effect. I may have lost £10 because of this detail.
  • I was unaware of the £5 offer however this may have been because I sent my mobile at the end of January.

However I have had an email from Love2Recycle suggesting that a phone I had sent in was 'faulty': 'no power, faulty keypad' which was not the condition of the phone. Thus they have tried to offer me a different value for the phone.

I have sent an email asking what they exactly mean by 'faulty' but if they do not offer a suitable reply I would suggest people to be wary of the company.

I shall post the outcomes on here, when I hear from the company.

You dont have to register on moneysupermarket website, i put the code in on love2recycle, then when i clicked proceed it said 'signin now' or 'register'
I tapped my details in (most of which they need anyway to send you the envelope) then it adds the extra fiver on.
    Jobs a good un!

  • Sent in a Nokia e61 in good condition in mid-January, was quoted £34, the phone shows as 'accepted' in my account - but at the time of writing have received neither payment or reply to my query. Probably best avoided...

EDIT: 18/02/09 This did get sorted on 2nd contact - they said they hadn't got my first message (despite the fact that it was via their website) but once they got the registered post information they did deal with this quickly and efficiently.

Just to update folk on progress on this... all sorted now
  • I have 'recycled' 7 old mobiles through Mopay and it has proved to be a complete nightmare.

Sending them to Mopay in December and requesting M&S vouchers I have this week (February) received all the vouchers.

They would not answer my phone calls which went straight to answerphone and emails sent each day were not responded to. They eventually sent me vouchers for 6 phones despite 7 being show on the Mopay prepared invoice and its only when I threatened to take them to court did I get the full amount.

Some guy who said he was from the distribution company said they 'take pride in their customer support' my experience is however somewhat different.

    Avoid at all costs.
  • Thanks for the tip about comparing a minimum of 3 recycle sites as the prices vary so much. I am collecting phones to raise money for the Stroke Association and thanks to this tip am getting more for the phones than I was by just using Envirofone.

I have just tried the Love2Recycle Feb 09 registration offer to try to get an extra £5 per phone to boost funds too. Have not completed the process yet so fingers crossed they are true to their word.

    Thanks for the tips. Sarah
  • I think love2recycle must have cottoned on that the code is on this site. It should work until 28th Feb, but seems to have stopped working already ... ?
  • anyone had any success with love2recycle? I am a bit wary as from the looks of it nobody has received their money yet. I want to trade a nokia sirocco (£105) so am a bit anxious since the phone is quite valuable.

    'thanks
