Boiler replacement advice needed
Good afternoon, Our 20 year old Potterton boiler still works, but we have to manually turn the dial to put it on, as it doesn't always fire up. Were at the point that we think we need to replace it but no idea about where to start. We live in a 3 bedroom terraced house and we had the free loft and cavity installation…

external wall insulation - issues in the future?
Has anyone had experience with External wall insulation , my mum has been given a grant for her home but after seeing reports it may cause damp and possibly issues when she comes to sell is having second thoughts. The work is being done through EON who have contracted the job out , if issues do arise is there any comeback…

Vaillant Ecofit Pure - not starting
I forgot to turn off the boiler before releasing air from the radiator today. Luckily heating was off and water was cold! But now the boiler won't work and the water pressure has dropped to 0.8. Assume it's related to me clearing the air but not sure? I've tried turning off the boiler and resetting it but it won't start up…

Red roofing membrane visible
My partner has just had her roof reroofed. We can see the bright red membrane under one end of the roofing where the guttering is lower. Before we raise this with the roofer, is this normal? Had the membrane been black or grey it probably wouldn't have been noticeable but being red it sticks out and is not in keeping with…

Think I have messed up this IKEA desk
Hello, I just put together a Vebjorn Ikea desk for a home office. The assembly is 99% complete but I have a problem with the draws! They have got stuck and I cannot seem to take them out and am worried I will damage the unit if I am too forceful. Any ideas how I can resolve this issue or will it be a case of calling IKEA…

Fridge freezer - replace or repair?
Hi I have an 8yr old upright freestanding Indesit fridge freezer The freezer seems ok but the fridge is not always as cold as I would like. The compressor still goes on and off but (it seems) is switching on less than it used to. Turning the thermostat control in the fridge does nothing. So I may just have a broken…

Pests
Hi all, moved into a property back in the summer and we seem to have an issue with some form of noisy rodents in the loft - we have set traps and will hopefully get up there to block accesses however how do we block gaps between brickwork and the roof!? so where you can see daylight - attached picture probably easier than…

Door bells - Ring, Eufy or something else?
Any advice on which smart door bell to choose? Needs to be battery powered, ideally with no subscription requirements. I know ring door bells are ubiquitous, but the ring sound does irritate me! Plus I understand the subscription is expensive and the need to buy a separate chime.

Our new build home is nearly 5 years old now. We have had a leaky garage for the last 4 years, water coming through the ceiling and down the walls it's been repaired probably 15 times, it's still leaking I'm waiting to hear back from the company as we reported the issue during the 2 year warranty period Has anyone had any…

Mice between floors
We seem to have a mouse/mice in the ceiling of our living. The room above is our bedroom. You can here it/them scurrying along in the living room ceiling but not in the bedroom. I have no idea how it/they are getting into it and there is no evidence of mice anywhere else. I've no idea how to get rid! Anyone else had this…

Gaps around UPVC window
Hi, I’ve started to strip some mouldy sealant around our bathroom windows prior to redecorating and as I’ve pulled out the old sealant have uncovered some larger than expected gaps between the plaster and the window frame. Note the very bottom section that I will pull out and refill. Does anybody have any suggestions on…

Vaillant ecoTEC 824 - simplest 30kW replacement?
Hi. Looking to replace a 13-year old 824 with a new combi as its location is being moved, so seems like a good time to also replace. The new boiler needs to be more powerful - 30kW (as against 24kW?) - as the mains supply will also be upgraded. The old 824 has actually had its pipes shifted to the new location before the…

Turning heating/boiler completely off during the night?
Dear All, we recently got a new boiler (Viessmann Vitodens 100 combi boiler) installed. Unfortunately, it frequently turns on during the night for a short time (although there's no tank in it, to keep the water ready and warm? It does so even if the thermostat is set to like 13 degrees or so, so it's not the heating) and…

Kitchen fitter in London: any recommendations?
Hi all, I’m looking for a kitchen fitter to install my new kitchen from DIY Kitchens at the beginning of January. I live in a flat in south central London. The units will arrive fully assembled, and a stonemason will handle the granite worktop installation separately. There’s minimal plumbing required since the sink and…

Water coming in top of Upvc window Frame.
Hi folks, I live in a bungalow, we have Upvc windows and Upvc covering the old wooden facia and soffits. The windows were put in in 2016, the installers used that foamy material that hardens to keep windows in place. Since the windows were put it on two occasions (last being today) I have noticed a leak of water on inside…

Ladder hire?
Spotted a problem with the gutter where it’s not draining away. We don’t have a ladder and the window upstairs opens the “wrong” way so we cannot access and clear the gutters from inside. I have asked around but nobody seemed interested in this job unless it costs more than £250. Anybody have experience of hiring a ladder…

Hallway (flats) emergency lighting question
We've got PIR mains lights in the hallway, they supposedly have a battery backup emergency lighting function. If the circuit breaker trips, should the emergency light come on all the time, or only when triggered by the PIR? Sorry I don't know what make/model these are, they are round LED ceiling lights.

Surestop
Apologies if this has been discussed before ... I have been speaking to a plumber about fixing a seized stopcock and he has suggested that a Surestop may be the answer which I had never heard of. I've googled it but was wondering if anyone has one and if they have had any problems with it? I've tried DW40 on the stopcock…
