Best cost effective burglar alarms that install UK wide
Hi. My neighbours home was burglared yesterday. I had a basic alarm for years but its no good as I now have FTTP broadband and no phoneline so need a new modern alarm. Can anyone advise the best monthly fee monitored alarms? Ive heard that those that verbally challenge an intruder are best to limit their time in your home.

Light sensor "flashing" LED
Looking for the simplest of gadgets, basically a "fake" security indicator (in fact there probably will be a real camera, but I'd like this too). It's the sort of thing that could probably be made DIY from veroboard. Literally a flashing blue LED in a box (not a large chunky lens, just a single, subtle, "dot" indicator),…

Condensate pipe help needed please
So my boiler is in the middle of the house and condensate pipe goes out onto flat roof. As my flat roof is rubberized I don’t want the slightly alkaline condensate pooling on the rubber so it goes along the wall and onto downpipe. This run is about 8 feet. about once a year it freezes which is a pain as it switches boiler…

Im repairing a Sauna and using this tape below anyone…

Matt white J pull kitchen..bit basic? Clinical?
I have had my kitchen for 40 years and its ready to be changed. (Overdue actually) I had in mid matt white , j pull handle cabinets. i was then going for a worktop in quartz called calacatta gold (white with prominent veins in it…a bit like me!) I was then taking this halfway up the wall as a splashback and topping with…

Another Fence Issue!
My neighbours took down the fencing on our boundary, one they had erected some years ago, and decided not to replace it with new fencing. So, on my side of the boundary, I paid for new fence panels and posts. This weekend, the neighbour planed the top of a panel, checked it with a spirit level and I saw him placing a panel…

Cleaning some old outdoor tiles
Hi all. I'm looking into how I can clean some old outdoor tiles. These tiles are from the church my wife and I attend. I don't know how old the tiles are: the church was established in 1708, but I have absolutely no idea of its architectual history. But, these could be hundreds of years old for all I know. The minister…

Neighbour building on wall
We have a large wall along the back of our property (walled garden) and according to our title deeds we 100% own it; it’s not a shared or party wall. It’s pretty tall and block a lot of light to our garden already, as do the south neighbours trees which are HUGE conifers ☹️ He has recently started a construction project,…

Water stopcock
Is it a good idea to turn water off at stopcock if going away for a few days and if you do turn it off can it cause problems with gas central heating boiler.

Bathroom extractor fan location
I'd previously received some advice on here about insulating/replacing a bathroom ceiling. Unfortunately I think that money needs to be directed elsewhere, so the plan now is just to install an extractor fan to get some improved ventilation. The question is where! The bathroom is at the back of a Victorian terrace. Its a…

Spray foam loft insulation removal, likely cost?
We live in a 1930's semi which had spray foam applied to the underside of tiles nearly 30 years ago as there was nothing under the tiles. Open cell and nothing to indicate any problem with timbers which are solid if probed. I'd like to get a very rough idea of likely cost for removal before contacting any of the firms…

Hole in cast iron soil pipe
There is a hole in the vertical section of an old cast iron soil pipe on the outside of my house. The hole is about 2-3cms diameter (would need to get up a ladder to inspect more closely). I think it has been there for quite some time and assume that it is caused by rust and is not a hole put there deliberately (can't…

Flooring advice
After some advice regarding regarding prepping a floor ahead of laying new vinyl or laminate planks in my lads new house (new to him at least). I've removed the vinyl flooring that was in place, in the kitchen this was laid on 12mm ply, (still in situ though looks a little murky) which in turn looks like it was fixed…

Can you run underfloor heating from a existing Radiator pipes?
Hi all This is a bit of a loaded question because I already (part) know the answer. Basically, we are removing our home bit by bit. Two years ago when we were having a new kitchen we literally dug up the kitchen floor and a company laid down a kit and poured screed over it. This kit was then connected to a manifold in the…

getting blinds for velux windows
we have a few windows that need blinds. 2 are easy (ish) as they are ordinary windows - one in the kitchen and another in the bathroom but they are odd sizes which will require a special order roller blinds I think. (in between sizes available at B&Q or Dunelm) And then there's upstairs where we have 4 velux windows. 3 of…
