Have I Just Grown a Weed?
Hi, I planted a rose seed on the first day of lockdown. 100 days later, I have this: I didn't think a rose would grow that quickly. Now, today, I see these sprouting on a couple of stems:reminiscent of a dandelion. Have I spent 4 months watering and repotting a weed?

Killing Nettles
Hi There is a large area of waste ground to the rear of my house which is over run with nettles which encroach into my garden. The waste area is owned by a local builder who went bust and refuses to respond to me. Is there a cheap and effective way to kill nettles? Thanks

Oak tree foam
Just a quick question. Whilst tidying round the oak tree in my garden I noticed a small strip of foam rising up from the base. There were a couple of wasps mooching about by the foam and a very strong smell of cider. The ground by the base was also wet and strong smelling I'm pretty sure that nothing has l lodged by the…

New lawnmower problems
I mowed through the cable of my lawnmower recently so I had to buy a new one. I was initially going to buy another Flymo one but after reading reviews, I decided to buy a Spear&Jackson one because everyone was saying how light it was and easy to push. It’s not! I can barely push it and it’s exhausting. Mowing the lawn now…

Climbers on fence
hello We have a couple of climbers that I want to plant (two honeysuckles and a jasmine). We want them to climb the fence dividing the back garden from our neighbours. They have a slightly raised garden and they own the fence. It's way too low (1.5m probably or less), and we need privacy. Its south facing so they don't…

Improved Heavy Clay Soil 'Flower Bed' - Now Grass and Weeds Growing
When I moved into my property, there was a section of my garden (which I will call a flower bed area) that was very heavy clay soil. It was the type of soil that is rock hard, grey and has cracks in the summer, and looks like a pond in the winter. When I moved in, I managed to turn the soil and didn't see any living…

Hand pollinated courgettes still not setting fruit
Hi all, Is there a reason why my courgette wont set fruit? Yesterday morning, I picked up some pollen from a male flower with an artist's paintbrush and put it on the female flower really carefully, making sure I got it into all the little grooves. Checked this morning. Nothing! I am assuming that courgettes grow quite…

Landscaping soil for garden.
Hi, Question is in bold if you want to skip over my story/situation. Thanks.. Story/Situation: I have just bought a new build home with a garden that is approx 14m x 6.4m. 60% of it is a ditch. The ditch is just soil, mainly clay based, no weeds, flowers, or grass. The rest of the garden, the other 40%, is a flat strip of…

Management of a watercourse (drainage ditch)
We have moved and inherited a watercourse aka a drainage
ditch. It’s 70-80m long and our boundary
is at/slightly beyond its far bank. It’s a slope of about 10%. Apparently in times of heavy rain water does
flow but I think mostly it’s dry. It’s
been neglected and is populated with mostly ivy, brambles and nettles as…

Gardening express and money saving expert offers
So naively, I saw an offer on the weekly email for gardening express and clicked through and completed an order for over £200 worth of plants. Assuming the money saving expert would only have reputable companies in their email offers. After a week they said they were picking the plants and after 3 weeks I got the automated…
