Weird growing season - and 2m tall Cosmos daisies...
Is it just my impression or has this year been one of the weirdest for growing. All kinds of strange things happening. Luck with gherkins which I've never managed before. Lots of cherry tomatoes (great!) but with a mushy texture(boo!)... ... and now, after putting out nothing but foliage for months, my Cosmos daisies have…

Suggestions please for low growing plants
We have a border at the bottom of our garden where we have planted 3 espalier apple trees. We would like to plant flowering perenials which don't grow too tall to provide ground cover so we can reduce the weeding. It's a north east facing border, very dry light clay silty soil. What would you suggest please? We plan on…

Cut back/cut down Rowan tree
Hello, We have a Rowan (so I am told) tree in our front garden. The house was built about 20 years ago and we moved in just over two years ago. It is a nice tree, and I don't know if it predates the house or if it was planted by the developer, the problem is it is in the wrong place. I have attached a picture and as you…

Very "fat" courgettes?
I've got 4 courgette plants up at the 'lottie. 1 "Orelia", 2 bog-standard green ones (probably "Zucchini"; packet finished & disposed of) and one that a friend gave me. This one is producing enormously "fat" courgettes. Last picked on Thursday, I picked again today and the 3 that were about 3" long with flowers still on…

T & M How did I forget? updated 04/09 results so far
Probably been over 30 years since I ordered from T&M and had forgotten why (I read the thread about the MSE perennial offer after and was not filled with confidence) Offer was effectively £25 for 5 x 30 bedding plants and I sort of expected almost immediate dispatch as end of season leftovers that was 23/06 - first pack of…

Will bulbs bought but not planted last year still be any good?
Hi, last year I got a bit carried away with Thompson and Morgan's £3 bulbs offer, and bought quite a lot. As a result, some of them didn't get planted - mainly hyacinth bulbs, some narcissus, and a pack of 5 tulip bulbs that were delivered after everything else. These have sat in their thick brown paper delivery bag away…

neighbour's high hedge, who is responsible for costs of trimming our side?
Hi all, sorry for yet another post about a neighbour's hedge! We live in a terraced house where our next door neighbour have a fence on their land which tends to grow very tall, especially towards the bottom of the garden where ground is on a slope. We understand that, without prior agreement, we are only allowed to trim…

Car stopping Plants?
We had a neighbours car handbrake fail a few years ago which allowed their car to roll and crash into not only their house but part of ours and we settled the issue with no problems however, We now have different neighbours who sometimes park their large vehicle diagonal on the drive so if the handbrake failed it would go…

Sloped Garden Ideas?
HiWe live in a new build which has a sloped back garden, upwards away from the house and behind us is a coach house which is taller than our house. The developer laid a small patio outside the house and a slightly bigger one which is level with the attached garage. Now we have a toddler, we would like more ‘flat’ space for…

Renovating garden furniture.
I have a wooden garden table that has gone silver. I've cleaned it with detergent and vinegar, and it's in good condition. What do I do next? Oil? Varnish? Wood stain? I think it's hardwood, but not teak. What's the best way to finish it to protect it for the next few years?

Using bleach to clear moss off tarmac - anybody actually tried it?
Thanks to all the rain, this year we've got a really bad dose of moss all over the tarmac outside our front door. Has anybody had any success using diluted bleach, and if so, exactly how did you go about it (dilution, applied when moss was wet or dry, how long before rinsing off etc)?

Long spreading Spikey Privet?
Hi, I have an area under my window which I would like to grow an Intruder proof thorny type Privet or similar. Unfortunately I only have soil at one end which means it would need to spread across an area 7 or 8 foot. I don't have soil to plant a series of bushes going across the length. I used to have a blackberry bush…

Ground wasp nest
Hi, We have a wasp nest in our garden, effectively a hole in our lawn. (maybe attracted to our apple tree which was infested with aphids) I've tried some insecticide over the entrance, which didn't do much. Wasps got upset and seem to have dug out a bit more. Maybe I should have persevered with more applications. Also…

What to plant behind this Acer (with pic)
so behind the acer is some space. for something to cover the ugly background add vertical interest. I added the wooden fence post (there are three across the back of the garden up to the trampoline with galvanised torsioned wire between them). Rethinking garden layout
I have quite a large garden and am looking to refresh some areas and change the layout around a bit. Does anyone know of good sites etc to help with design and plant selection etc? Suggestions for shrubs wanted
I'd like to plant a few shrubs in a small raised bed on the front drive. The purpose is to screen the pipes and drain from the kitchen. Ideally they'll be about 3-4 ft tall. Evergreen would be good. Bonus points if they also have some flowers or berries or colour of some sort. South facing, Hertfordshire so fairly chalky…
