Rats from neighbours garden
At the fence at the bottom of my garden is a house which stands about 50 metres below us. They have done nothing with it for 2 years, (they used have a company in twice a year to strim it, but no longer bother even with this).I am fighting a losing battle with weeds coming through and an infestation of rats - they have at…

Acanthus
I have a big stand of acanthus. It clearly loves my garden - except that this year it looks a little worse for wear and something has been eating the leaves. I assume it’s caterpillars. I wonder if I should have been feeding it. The flowers have made seed heads - do I cut them down? Do I cut down the stems withe leaves…

I've heard about it, seen it and looked on the net and it looks straightforward. But it's scarey not wanting to kill a favourite plant and I wondered if anyone has any advice, hints or tips please. I have a Magnolia Stellata and a conical Bay tree. I can't accommodate them in the garden or pots that are any bigger. There is…

Do i need more than one of these for hedge?
I have seen this plant as a hedge on the perimeter of a large factory and i notice it is quite a beast with huge thorns and spikey leaves, after research i found it to be Berberis Juilianae (Chinese barberry). I would love to grow this at my elderly mums house under her window as she worries about people getting through…

My Pyracantha hedges are not doing well in the shady side of the garden although they are a great intruder proof box hedge over on the sunny side with Red and Yellow berries. I would love something Intruder proof on the shady side to form a hedge, Hawthorn and Blackthorn have been suggested by a private garden centre owner…

Weird growing season - and 2m tall Cosmos daisies...
Is it just my impression or has this year been one of the weirdest for growing. All kinds of strange things happening. Luck with gherkins which I've never managed before. Lots of cherry tomatoes (great!) but with a mushy texture(boo!)... ... and now, after putting out nothing but foliage for months, my Cosmos daisies have…

Suggestions please for low growing plants
We have a border at the bottom of our garden where we have planted 3 espalier apple trees. We would like to plant flowering perenials which don't grow too tall to provide ground cover so we can reduce the weeding. It's a north east facing border, very dry light clay silty soil. What would you suggest please? We plan on…

Cut back/cut down Rowan tree
Hello, We have a Rowan (so I am told) tree in our front garden. The house was built about 20 years ago and we moved in just over two years ago. It is a nice tree, and I don't know if it predates the house or if it was planted by the developer, the problem is it is in the wrong place. I have attached a picture and as you…

Very "fat" courgettes?
I've got 4 courgette plants up at the 'lottie. 1 "Orelia", 2 bog-standard green ones (probably "Zucchini"; packet finished & disposed of) and one that a friend gave me. This one is producing enormously "fat" courgettes. Last picked on Thursday, I picked again today and the 3 that were about 3" long with flowers still on…

T & M How did I forget? updated 04/09 results so far
Probably been over 30 years since I ordered from T&M and had forgotten why (I read the thread about the MSE perennial offer after and was not filled with confidence) Offer was effectively £25 for 5 x 30 bedding plants and I sort of expected almost immediate dispatch as end of season leftovers that was 23/06 - first pack of…

Will bulbs bought but not planted last year still be any good?
Hi, last year I got a bit carried away with Thompson and Morgan's £3 bulbs offer, and bought quite a lot. As a result, some of them didn't get planted - mainly hyacinth bulbs, some narcissus, and a pack of 5 tulip bulbs that were delivered after everything else. These have sat in their thick brown paper delivery bag away…
