Homemade cleaning products
Both my cat and I have allergies to some scents and cleaning and laundry product ingredients, so I have to be very careful with what I use. I currently use items from the Ecover Zero range but it is quite expensive. A litre of all purpose cleaner costs £2.99 and lasts about 10 days (at most) before its used up, a litre and…

Making A Birthday Cake with Support Issues (the cake lol)
OK, my 13 year old wants a Star Trek Voyager (spaceship) Birthday cake. I have made some fabulous cakes in the past (including a dinosaur cake with scales no one could believe I made myself he he). This cake will need to have some support for the top oval dish…

Removing kerosene (heating oil) from clothes and washing machine
Can anyone suggest an effective way too do this, preferably without the use of chemicals? So far I've done a 60c soak wash with detergent, baking soda and white vinegar then a 40c wash with the same additives but the smell is still there.

Supermarket Snobbery
I used to love my posh supermarket. I loved the perk of free coffee and the good customer services and pleasant vibe. I have shopped there less and less over the last couple of years but I still buy certain items from there regularly and loyally. I went in today to get a few bits and as I was getting my coffee perk a…

A sadness that so many OS stalwarts aren't here now isn't it?
These OS threads are looking so sparse since the new format came into being and I can't be the only one missing our friends like JackieO who has given up posting and many others who were the backbone of the OS ethos. Who else is missing? It's such a pity as they are the holders of knowledge and sensible views that are…

Trouser hem
DGS2 has had a growth spurt and needed new school trousers: at £30+ per pair, DD can only afford 1 pair. I am going to take the hem down on his old ones as they are still in good condition but they are navy, thickish corduroy and there is a very visible faded line where the hem has been let down. Does anyone have any ideas…

Weekly Flylady Thread 17th February 2020
Welcome to the weekly Flylady Thread. What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the whole…

How do I cook burgers in an uncoated stainless steel frying pan (electric cooker)
I can't figure out how to cook burgers on a stainless steel frying pan (uncoated). I use rapeseed oil and it generates a lot of smoke, so I put a glass lid which has a ventilation hole in it. If the heat is lower than medium, the burger browns on the outside but stays pink in the middle. If I use a medium heat, the…

Cooking times
I've got a leg of lamb that weighs 2.370kg. I've checked on a couple of cooking calculator sites and one has given a cooking time of 1hr 36m, and the other has come back with 3hr 16m! Why would there be such a huge difference?
