Eating from the Emergency Stocks - a recipe/ideas thread
So I've been diligently squirrelling things away in the larder and freezer in the event of anything untoward weather-or-Brexit-related occurring, and have reasonably good stocks, I think. When relying on stores to create meals-in-a-crisis before, I have usually settled on the old favourites of a chickpea and tinned peach…

Machine dye questions
A number of my white bed linens have become stained and the stains won't budge. I can't afford to replace them so I'm thinking of dying them instead. The dye I'm thinking of using is the Paradise Blue Dylon Machine Dye. I've never dyed anything before so was wondering if anyone could answer a few questions? Firstly the…

Weekly Flylady Thread Pick'n'Mix 21st October 2019
Thank you, Valli, for last week's thread. What is FLYLADY? Well, it's our version of the US flylady idea - but we work on the principle that housework is not fun, it's boring, can be time-consuming, is often thankless but, unfortunately, necessary. It's here on Old Style to provide the support we all need and to make the…

A Brave New World
I've been thinking on this thread for a couple of months, maybe now is the right time: Given the experience of folks on this sub-forum, what do you think the modern world needs that the old, possibly rose tinted world has to offer - but maybe with a modern twist. Let's try and keep overt politics out of it.. I'll start…

Retirement prepping
So OH is retiring next month. The finances are (hopefully) in place but I'm getting nervous about the reduced income. I've been a saver all my life and this change will mean dipping into those savings each month to top up the pension. For me that is a mindset I'm struggling with. I have a bit of spare income this…

Cleaning a thermos
Not sure if this is the right bit of the forum but hoping the collective wisdom will set me right. I have been using a small thermos flask for tea. I drink mine black and the thermos is getting stained (internally) from the tannin. Any ideas on how to clean the stain off?

Slow Cooker overnight
Wasn't sure what to put as the title of this thread... I'm not cooking food overnight, but all the recipes I can find for beef goulash need the beef browned and the stock and tomatoes etc pre cooked for a bit before tipping the lot into the slow cooker. I don't fancy doing this at the same time as rushing to get out the…

How many spreadsheets do you have?
I have always kept a budget spreadsheet in Excel but today someone at work was saying that she keeps a spreadsheet for Christmas and Birthday presents which sounds like a good idea. Does anyone here have a lot of spreadsheets for different things? If so do you put everything in one workbook or have separate ones?

Food shop for a family of 5.
We currently budget £350 a month for our food/cleaning products shop. Family of five 2 adults 3 kids although 1dc is now a teen and near enough eats like an adult. Recently I’ve been going over budget more and more. It’s time to cut down ideally I’d like to get it to 300 a month or less. Is it possible? I shop at…
