A Brave New World

Options
I've been thinking on this thread for a couple of months, maybe now is the right time:

Given the experience of folks on this sub-forum, what do you think the modern world needs that the old, possibly rose tinted world has to offer - but maybe with a modern twist.

Let's try and keep overt politics out of it..

I'll start with a couple:

1) Nationalisation of sorts of the medication supply to the NHS, as suggested by the one who's name rhymes with a kind of trouser press. Fantastic idea, but next to impossible to negotiate. Probably doomed to failure, but we can dream. It would be the next logical step in the evolution of the NHS

2) Integrated support for a national foodbank network from the big supermarkets. Inspired by another thread here. Not just support in terms of stock, but use of their existing technologies, such that right now I could gift say £20 to pretty much anyone on the other side of the country so they could walk into their local Morrisons & feed their kids. The scheme could/should have limits in terms of products & value, but it'd sure help take the burden off the bricks & mortar food banks out there today.

There you go folks - do your worst...

Nationalised, subsidised public transport systems. To get people out of their cars and on the trains, trams and buses. A good network of reasonably priced, available car hire programmes. they do all of this in Sweden and you can hire a car for a couple of hours to do the shopping or a couple of weeks to go on holiday...

Lovely idea for discussion unrecordings and I can't disagree with either of your suggestions except to say that I would like to see an end to anyone needing to visit foodbanks. To that end, and it isn't the entire eanswer but might help, is to see more done to educate young people (and those struggling) in budgetting and cookery etc. This has been discussed on other threads and the cookery lessons I had weren't much use, but if they were tailored to how to cook good, seasonal, basic meals then that could help.
I like Mrs LW's suggestions too. Fortunately where I live there is a good community (although quiet and understated if you know what I mean).
The main thing I would like to see is that ALL schools are rated as good If not excellent) so there is no jockeying for places. All hospitals too and more money given to those who work in both (vested interest as family member is a nurse).

Do you think TPTB are reading? After all they have nothing better to do right now!

Yep - good call, but I think this goes without saying. I'm thinking of infrastructure, so the practical application would be the means for families to stay in their homes, to develop roots and enhance that community spirit.

Secure tenancies and better social housing options. Where I grew up most folk had a "council house" and knew it was theirs for life as long as they covered the rent.
"Proper" apprenticeships for those that want to take that path, yes there are still decent ones about but are like "hen's teeth" - the good ones target those young folk that have the "results" or potential that mean they could go to uni but opt not to but a lot of the others are just ways of keeping youngsters away from the unemployment figures.

No more "loans" and bring back grants for our most talented young people but equally only for those skill areas that we need most. It's scary how much an "honours" degree has devalued, Masters seems to the norm required for what a good 2nd class used to take you .

Oh yes, very much understand this is pie in the sky. But given we're currently getting an object lesson on the interconnectedness of everything, now might might be a time to dwell - for example with schools - ignoring the funding crisis because like the NHS, police etc that's a given - how do we cram so much extra information into formative minds

Sorry TPTB ? -I think I'm stuck on the B

TPTB - The Powers that be

Government funded hospices so they longer have to survive as charities. Not only do they offer specialist care and support but on a practical level they mean beds are freed up in hospitals

Heath care that isn't dependent on a postcode lottery and England should join Scotland and Wales with free prescriptions there should be no reason that people should have to choose which medicine to pay for and which they can do with out.

Yup, another good one, in fact that's reminded me about social care, currently council funded which should be folded back into the NHS (though we might be talking about the same thing). Free prescriptions would dovetail nicely into a state run supply chain. And I suppose in an ideal world would include dental & opticians
