Home made Christmas food presents
Every year I make my family a home made food parcel for Christmas. It's for my parents, sister and her little boy who all live together. This year they're getting: 2 jars of grapefruit marmalade (a little runnier that usual but don't know why), a large jar of lemon curd, 2 jars of lime curd, 2 jars of orange curd, 2 fruit…

Fruit/veg staying soft in freezer - a problem?
I've got some frozen cherries (bought frozen) in my freezer, and some mashed veg I put in yesterday. When I took out the cherries today, they were pretty soft (rather than frozen solid) and the mash hasn't frozen solid yet. I've checked with a fridge/freezer thermometer and the temperature is about -5C, though. Any idea…

What are you doing right NOW to prepare for Christmas?
I'm about to clean the fridge so I can fill it with all the Christmas food arriving tonight from tesco:) What are you doing?

Help - thawed turkey too early!
I have a 1.4kg crown and I for some silly reason defrosted it in the basis of 24 hours per kilo when it should have been 12 hours. I put it in the fridge on Wednesday night and it has now fully defrosted this morning (I checked last night and it hadn't). According to guidance it can only be kept in the fridge after thawing…

Freezer Door left open
I left my freezer door open, just ajar, for around 24 hours. When I came to open it tonight, some things near the front of the freezer had defrosted entirely, but were still cold. I have binned those (e.g. a chicken breast). However, stuff further back and in the bottom compartment, were still solid with ice visible in the…

Recipe finder
Hi all :) thought I'd share this website I've found as it seems really useful. I was looking for a cookie recipe with no egg in (trying to make do with what's in the cupboard) and this site came up, it basically lets you specify things like your dietary requirements, tastes etc and you can also specify which ingredients…

Washing Machine
So my washing machine isn't working (or more to the point, the hose or something at the back is leaking). As the machine is 6 1/2 years old and where the leak is, is very difficult to fix apparently (my dad who's not an expert by any means, but who has tried patching up said hose and it's not worked), I should get a new…

Jam crumblie
Does anyone have the recipie please. I've tried the grocery challenge thread where I'm sure it used to be bot I can't find it. I've been making mince pies and thought I'd use up the rest as the jam in jam crumblie. Thanks very much in advance.

Regal or Royal Icing
I plan to ice my Christmas cake on Friday. I'm opting for bought marzipan. Icing I'm not to sure My supermarket only seems to sell Dr Oetker Regal Icing as opposed to Royal Icing. What is the difference. I appreciate I can make my own Royal Icing but I've lots of other things to be getting on with. As some of my guests are…

Bargain Christmas tree...
For anyone like us who leaves decorating until the last minute & likes a real tree, check out your nearest IKEA; I was in the Southampton store earlier, where they still have a number of trees left. Their offer of buy a tree for £25 and get a £20 voucher to spend in the New Year just got better, as it's getting rather…

Slow cooker oxtail casserole
Ages ago I read a brilliant recipe for slow cooker oxtail casserole here on old style...now I want to make it again I can't find it! I've done lots of searches but I'm not coming up with anything. So if anyone has a foolproof oxtail recipe can they share, pretty please :)

The Christmas leftovers ideas thread
What are your favourite recipes for using up Christmassy foods? We like turkey curry and I do the Jamie Oliver turkey, leek and bacon pie. I make a mean meatloaf with sausagemeat, bacon, mince and onions. My grandfather always ate cold Christmas pudding in a sandwich for Boxing Day lunch- I think I would have liked him a…
