cleaning a satchel
does anyone know the best way to clean and re-vitalise an old hide school satchel? I went to grammer school in the '50s, and my old school satchel has survived! However it is looking rather grubby and very shabby, and now that satchels are back in fashion, I thought I'd clean it up and get a bit more wear out of it. I can…

Halving Christmas Cake Recipe
I hope one of you clever bakers can help me. I bake a xmas cake each year but its only me who really eats it. Its just us for xmas this year. My husband and the children will probably only have a slice each. As much as I love christmas cake, I've still got a few slices left in the freezer from last year :rotfl: To make a…

jeans wearing out at crotch - tips?
Hi all, I thought you lovely people might have some tips for clothes preservation. My jeans usually end up being binned (well, recycled/crafted etc) after a year or less because I wear the crotch area thin and then it turns into a hole. I cycle most days, only for about 15 minutes in total, but suspect that might be the…

shopping budget for 1 person for 1 month...
How much could I realistically aim to get my monthly food/basic toiletry shop down to per month? I'm only buying for one person and I know I'm spending far too much on my food shopping every month. I have a bad habit of going into the supermarket and wondering around picking up stuff because I feel like it. I never make a…

Nyone got or used a karcher window cleaner/vacuum thingie ?
Just wondered if these are any good ? Our house is knee deep in dust after we had hall decorated, so I'd like to be able to do windows (can hardly see out of them at present), bathroom tiles etc etc but don't want to buy one if they aren't any good. Reviews on Amazon. Argos etc seem excellent and I'm really HOPELESS at…

Is it too late to make a Christmas Cake?
I have ordered a Xmas cake from our local bakery for the last few years and it was wonderful. This year the lady is poorly so now not making them and I don't know what to do. I doubt a shop brought one would match up, so wondered about making my own, but is it too late? If not can anyone recommend a good recipe for a moist…

Help! Perfect roast beef - timings?
We've just been given a beautiful joint of beef (don't know what 'cut') weighing exactly 5lb...........how long should I actually cook it for to be medium/well done? There are so many conflicting timings out there and I can burn salad given half a chance, so apologies for sounding thick. :)

How warm is your home at the moment?
It's probably an age thing but I seem to feel the cold more these days - the double whammy being that I'm retired and home more . However it feels OK at around 15 centigrade during the day. At around 5pm I light the solid fuel stove - perhaps with an hour boost from the CH. If I'm feeling really chilly I've been known to…

Is there anywhere I might be able to get free fruit and veg?
I mean surplus stuff, windfalls, stuff that's about to go off etc. I haven't got any money at all for food right now - fortunately I do have quite a lot of pasta, flour, oats and stuff in my cupboards, but I know I need some fruit and veg to eat too. Sadly there's no market in my town where I might find stuff at the end of…

cheap food tips requested
Hi there. I have just brought my first home and really want to save as much as I can with the aim hopefully to overpay the mortgage. I am sure that I waste a lot of money when shopping for food - just wondering if anyone had words of wisdom. I am very aware of animal welfare and so couldnt eat chickens that arent free…

Good sources of free sewing patterns?
I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I've started making my DD clothes to save money, both refashioning stuff from charity shops (adult stuff into kid clothes) and making things from scratch. So far I've just made my own patterns, but I'd like to be able to get some free patterns that include winter clothes as a…

I've just bought one of these lamps from ebay - it was listed as new. It's been quite sunny here the past couple of days, and it's been in the sunniest room in the house, but it doesn't seem to work! Does anyone have any tips on how to charge it? Maybe it's us doing it wrong!

Cooking whole chicken from frozen
I don't think this is a stupid question, but would I be ok to cook a whole chicken from frozen today. I could let it defrost from now until after lunch, don't want to eat til about 5pm. Have looked on various cooking websites this morning but opinion seems divided. I know it will need cooking for quite a bit longer than…
