We've just been given a beautiful joint of beef (don't know what 'cut') weighing exactly 5lb...........how long should I actually cook it for to be medium/well done? There are so many conflicting timings out there and I can burn salad given half a chance, so apologies for sounding thick.

without knowing the cut its impossoble to say - perfect timing for brisket is totally different than for fillet - and cooking either the wrong will will render them inedible....People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.
