On a positive note..re there any crops that have done well this year?
Hi everyone! I'm feeling that the world is about to end with the news reporting that food prices are rocketing, etc. The emphasis does seem to be on the crops which have failed miserably. However, I do remember a while ago that the cost of olive oil had gone down because of a bumper harvest. The price of olive oil still…

Does anyone boil 'normal' sausages?
My daughter visited a museum with school the other day, bought a few little things from the museum shop, as they do. One was a little book (more like a booklet really) called 'War-Time Cookery to save fuel and food value'. It says 'Issued in the National Food Campaign Exhibition 1940' on the front. Anyway, one of the…

Dinner this evening - ideas please?
Hello, Not sure if this is the right board or if this question should be in the Families board, please move if necessary. There are 3 of us in our family (2 adults, 1 child - aged 1) and the weekly shopping bill is coming in at about £120 a week, which having read the posts on this board seems ludicrously high. About £40…

My laundry smells foosty - what am I doing wrong?
I wonder if anyone can help. When I do my laundry, if I don't get it out of the machine and dealt with immediately, it stinks. Like it's been left in the machine for 2 days and not just 2 hours. What am I doing wrong? If I take it out the machine and leave it in the basket, it also smells really bad. It's a new machine -…

Chutney too vinegary. Options?
:hello: This is the first year I've ever had to give up on my tomatoes and make green tomato chutney. :( I think it tastes ok, but it has a big vinegary aftertaste. Not too good. I'm a bit reluctant to add more sugar as there's loads in there already. Do I have any other options or is sugar the only way to go? Cheers, MBE

Cleaning Slate Tiles For The First Time
I've just installed a new multi-purpose stove and set it on a hearth of black slate. The work has just finished this afternoon and the cleanup is in progress. I've tried to clean the tile with a mild detergent and water, I've also tried some window cleaner, but there is still a residue of dust and smear left on the tile.…

Dairy/ soya free dip help please!
I am a volunteer cookery teacher in one of the local schools and one of the children in this year's cohort is allergic to both dairy and soya. Our first session usually involves making a cream cheese and chive dip and a yogurt and honey one, with two veg or fruit to dip into each. My question to the wise ones: what on…
