On a positive note..re there any crops that have done well this year?

Hi everyone!

I'm feeling that the world is about to end with the news reporting that food prices are rocketing, etc. The emphasis does seem to be on the crops which have failed miserably. However, I do remember a while ago that the cost of olive oil had gone down because of a bumper harvest. The price of olive oil still seems fairly reasonable compared to what it was.

With that in mind, I wondered if there were any other crops/foods that have had a good year and may be cheaper or even stay the same?

I know I may be a little too optimistic with this, but I'm wondering whether a change of menu is a possibility to stick within my meagre budget. As the news hasn't mentioned much (anything?) about any bumper harvests I'm wondering whether there any?

Well the crops in my garden did very well for the first time ever - tomatoes, potatoes, pears and strawberries - the first year I haven't killed my herbs!

My raspberries were a bit tasteless though this year.

As for world wide I don't know - sorry.

I still have chillis, tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, sweetcorn [ripe yesterday and today] loads of squashes picked this morning, courgettes, runners, parsley; and more to come. Really bad on the fruit front though - including foraging. :( Apart from my own raspberries which have been immense.

It's been a late year, and lost loads of stuff to slugs but you have to diversify and keep trying different things in the hope that things evolve and survive.

Its been a great year here for soft fruit..all apart from blackberries likewise brambles for foraging.

Hard fruit apples and pears are mostly barren too although my little miniarettes did themselves proud and were loaded???

Potatoes in tubs fantastic and storing well,in the ground carp :D

Runner beans, french, borlottis mental year but few peas as they succumbed to mildew very early or slugs..

Salads have been prolific but not much use for storing only the toms and cukes.

Roots have been my disaster beetroot, parsnips turnips *sob*,carrots have all been dire..came up disappeared or got going and disappeared never seen them do that before I have 1 turnip, around a kg of carrots and five parsnips..

Cabbage family all exceptional so at least I'll have me own sprouts for xmas if theres a shortage

Have loads of autumn sown stuff in and thats all doing fab so far...cue snow :rotfl::D

Right - what's cheap on the street market near us - runner beans and corn-on-the-cob. Corn's cheaper this weekend than it has been for the two previous years, when the best I could get was 3 for £1, but on Friday it was 4 for £1 and by lunchtime today, when the stallholders want to go home, it was 6 for £1. But we're getting to the end of the season fast!

Raspberries don't seem to have got any cheaper but we've had an excellent crop. Strawberries were cheap this year & small British strawbs were still available this weekend at £1 per punnet; I didn't buy any but am regretting that now!

  • Our runner beans and pototoes did well this year. The apple tree was fairly fruity. Apart from that, I think garden crops were down by at least half of what I expected, after several sowings were lost to rain and slugs.

    Not a good year.
  • We had the biggest strawberry crop ever, but the blackcurrants didn't do well, the loganberry didn't do too badly considering it was only the first year. Runner beans, tomatoes, lettuce, peppers and cabbages actually did well.
Potatoes were an ok crop, but not as good as last year. we had a few cherries and victoria plums but not many.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light

Raspberries are still doing well, and I had good crops of blackberries, runner beans sweetcorn and peas. Also a massive glut of cucumbers. I think everything else drowned.
  • You've just reminded me - I've got loads of parsnips to come and absolutely loads of beetroot.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
