Cleaning Slate Tiles For The First Time

I've just installed a new multi-purpose stove and set it on a hearth of black slate. The work has just finished this afternoon and the cleanup is in progress.
I've tried to clean the tile with a mild detergent and water, I've also tried some window cleaner, but there is still a residue of dust and smear left on the tile. So question what's the best way to give tiles a good clean first time around?
As always thanks in advance
Kevin

Try putting a few drops of oil on a cloth - any oil- and wipe it down with that. I use it to polish my hearth (not slate), and my slate place mats. On my hearth, where no food will be I often us baby oil. On my place mats I use veg oil.0
