mouly monterey jack cheese
Hi I bought some monterey jack cheese and have only just got around to using it. The use by date is 27/04/10 but it is slightly mouldy round the edges. If I just slice off the mould will it still be ok to use and eat? It's for a pot luck family picnic and I don't want to risk making everyone, including kids, ill TIA x

removing felt tip from parquet floor
DS2 managed to get hold of a purple felt tip (left out by accident by DS1) and make his not inconsiderable mark on the lovely parquet floor in our rented house. Fortunately it was "normal" felt tip and not indelible marker. DH went absolutely bananas  and was certain it wouldn't come out and we would have to get the…

67p for 500g of Sainsburys Frozen Beef....bargain?
Tonight I saw 500g of frozen beef reduced on sale from £2.67ish to 67p. I have never tried frozen meat but I shall see how it goes. I think I will put in with frozen stew pack, tinned tomatoes, beans, mustard, stock, onions etc for a casserole. Hopefully it will be quite nice and prove to be a bit of a bargain. We shall…

Calories in homemade food?
This is something which has bugged me for a long time: How do you (or can you?) calculate how many calories you're consuming in home-cooked food? I'm really really trying to lose some weight, so try to eat healthily. Almost everything we eat in our house is cooked from scratch using fresh veg, etc... but all I seem to have…

Virgin olive oil - aquired taste?
I'm just watching Jamie Oliver on 4 at the mo, and my mouth is watering :D , but what I dont get is this virgin olive oil thing. I got some as all the chefs use it, but I think its a strong taste and it makes my food taste weird. I just tend to stick to regular sunflower oil now. Is it an aquired taste? Do you love it or…

Do I really spend to much on food?
I thought I was doing good by cutting our household groceries bill from 750 a month to 500 for the three of us. However I see that most people here are aiming hugely lower than that. Ok, I don't understand how. We eat healthy, I cook everything, I plan meals for the week and shop for those ingredients. Huge amounts of…

Old style curry recipe?
Hi all. I'm hoping someone can work out what I mean. I'm looking for a recipe for "old style" chicken curry. The sort of thing I can remember them serving in cafeteria's and canteens. Would be very mild, often with sultana's and possibly apple in it. Very much I suspect a British invention and nothing like either Indian…

How to remove iron-on hemming strip from fabric?
Hello, I've done a quick search in the forums and couldn't find what I'm after. I used some of that iron-on hemming strip/tape (a very fine one from IKEA) to hem some delicate cotton curtains. I've taken the curtains down and now want to use them full-length, but the hemming tape is stuck so hard that it won't budge. Does…

Making wheaten bread..now!
Hi, I've got my first ever loaf of wheaten bread in the oven right now. I seem to distantly recall that my Gran wrapped hers in a tea towel when it came out to stop it drying out. Do any of you do this? Or any other tips that might help such as shelf life, storage , suitability for freezing etc. Thanks. Arty.
