Why do my flapjacks never set????

Vegetable Stew To Save
I've made a vegetable stew and it's turned out really sweet. I thought the onion and leeks I put in would out flavour the parsnips and swede, but they haven't. Given that we're all veggie's what can I do to lose or disguise the sweet taste.

chipped crockery, possible to repair?
