Picking OS brains!!!
Hi all, Many moons ago, I went for a weekend to the lovely Stapleford Park (the weekend was a present from friends) and before dinner, when we were enjoying our drinks (oh! the memories!!!) we were offered some guinness and stilton pat! with some lovely crunchie black super-thin biscuits. I was wondering if anyone had made…

Oniony milk
Hi OSers! I'm going to attempt these battered onion rings (thank you ViksB) to go with my cod. I've got homemade wedges in the oven so I guess it's turning into a HM chip shop dinner! I've got the onion rings soaking in milk but I'm wondering if there is anything I could use the milk for afterwards? I don't tend to make…

Some nice xmas biscuits, rum truffles, flapjacks etc and package them up nice in small boxes or cellophane and make like a little hamper, then that way its alot cheaper than buying things and its alot more…

SERIOUS plea for help!!
Hi all, I am desperate to find a recipe for a dish my mum ( and grandma ) used to make. It was a meat ( and possibly potato? ) pie. The difference was, it had a suet crust top, instead of pastry. I want to make this for my children ( 20 and 22!!) and, as my mum and grandma are no longer with us, I don't know how. Have…

Help!! Does anyone have a "Rival" 6l slow cooker
REALLY stupid question, for which I apologise. I've not used mine for ages, and I can't find the instruction booklet. On the dial, is I the low setting or is it II? Told you it was stupid, and it probably should be very obvious, but I can't figure it out!

children's treat recipe
Hi all, I need some ideas for an easy to make cake/cakes/pudding for children for a Christmas Eve 'do' -I promised my m-in-law I'd contribute. Mandoline
I have invested £60 in a professional grade (stainless steel - I think)Mandolin and I just cannot get on with it at all. I can't seem to get the results I want and I find it so awkward to use - nothing like as smooth and easy as the professionals make it look. I fear I will have an expensive 'white elephant' sitting in the…

New baking tins
I seem to remember reading somewhere that you should prime new tins by brushing with oil and baking in the oven before use. Is there any point in doing this with new non-stick tins? If so, how hot and for how long? Thanks, Ness.

witterings on OS life
Husband & i were talking (:D we do sometimes) about how much life has changed since the 50s when we grew up, and how hard it still is. Then we decided that people sometimes make it harder than it needs to be.. for instance - growing up in the 50s, you had one fire in the house, usually coal. Your mum stayed at home and…

I get a veg box every two weeks and now have one potato to last until this coming Monday so I'd rather not use it in leek and potato soup, so has anyone used instant mash in their leek and potato soup in place of the potato? Does it work? I will be blending the soup after so it won't affect the look

need a soft icing for cake please
I´ve just made an orange cake, and poured in a syrup (bit like you do with a lemon drizzle) and left it to soak in. I want to add a soft creamy icing, using some sort of flavouring (don´t know what, perhaps brandy) and using icing sugar with quark, marscapone or cream cheese, but I need some ideas and inspiration please…
