Chickens sitting on each other - why?
Sorry about title, but I promised to put the question here. S. has two girls now, who have started roosting on each other in an outside corner at night. Is there a Why to this? - or is it just chickens being chickens, as they will. Should he be concerned?

Novice at sewing - would you try this?
I recently got a sewing machine and am new to sewing. I have managed to make some duvet covers, sheets and pillowcases for kids bed. Yesterday i bought the most lovely suede fabric going cheap and I made some cushion covers for my lounge. I have quite a bit left, and I was thinking of cutting one of my duvet covers in half…

1kg of mince - best base to use?
Morning all, I've been lurking for a long time (mostly during the day as my job has been keeping me less than busy - but that is another post) and I thought now was a good time to ask for some help! I bought 2 x 1kg of mince last week and stupidly froze 1kg before splitting it. Need to defrost it and get it cooked but…

Citric Acid/Ascorbic Acid
Hi, All! Need to buy citric acid to make fizzy bath salts, but can't get hold of it. From posts left in 2006 it seems that CA is one of the constituents of home-made bombs, which would explain its disappearance from shop shelves. I've just checked out the difference between Citric Acid and Ascorbic Acid, and the chemical…

OS laundry
I'm sure there must be a thread on here already but I can't find any so here goes... What laundry products do you use in your washing machine? I use 3/4 cap of surf small and mighty, about 3 tbsp (guess) of soda crystals and a capful of white vinegar in the rinse. I use surf because it makes the clothes smell really fresh…

Boxes of Dumpling Mix
Do you think I could just make up the mix and roll it out to use as a pastry lid for a pie? It will be a gravy and meat filled pie so it will be wet enough on the bottom but will it work? I bought the boxes of mix from a local £1 shop and it was 5 for a £1 - I couldnt resist.

defrosting?
Hi everyone, I am just wondering if you all follow the recommendations for defrosting food-ie defrost overnight in fridge? I always try to, but if I put something in fridge at 7-8 pm, the following night, when I go to cook it its always frozen still. Now this isnt a whole bird or anything-pork chops, mince etc, all stays…

Basket obsession. A confession.
Ok, so maybe a weird title to a thread but it is true. I have a basket obsession. It all started when I was young & my Nan had a wicker basket on wheels with a walking stick handle. I used to wheel it round the garden and fill it with fallen apples. I love going shopping with a wicker basket popping into local little…

Cheap Christmas Dinner?
Once again this year xmas is rolling round and I am wondering how we are going to afford it. We have decided (the adults at least) to focus on the kids for the presents and to have a nice meal together. What I am wondering is how many ideas can we come up with to keep the meal costs down to a minimum. I don't mean having…

OH sabotage of batch cooking!
So, last night I spent all evening in the kitchen, watching old episodes of Black Books on 4oD and doing some batch cooking. I made a HUGE bolognaise and veg style sauce which I stuffed some peppers with, and a massive ratatouille (well, it looked massive at the beginning but of course cooked right down into two very nice…

I washed my mushrooms - was this wrong?
I had some mushrooms left in the fridge that I thought would be best frozen. I washed them as they were a bit gritty then left them to drain. However they seemed to have absorbed loads of water - I can squeeze them and they drip out water  Was this the wrong thing to do? Do mushrooms always act likes sponges?
