Cooked a chicken. Now what?
 :rotfl: Pretty sure it's cooked. Juices look clear and I stuck a knife in the leg and the meat was falling off it. Looks and smells pukka. :D But what do I do with the juices? Do I use it to cook the roast potatoes? I've only done them once before and they were pretty horrible. Not sure I had enough oil in the…

Does Apple Chutney Thicken during cooking or on standing?
Hi Following on from some really useful tips of things to do with tons and tons of apples I am making my first ever batch of apple chutney using the Nigella Lawson recipe from the Domestic Goddess book. According to the recipe you cook the chutney for 30 - 40 mins until it starts to thicken. I am at 45 mins (about to turn…

the cheapskate shopping list and recipe thread
anyone want to join in? as stated on another thread, I don't write a shopping list then try to find everything on it at the cheapest place: I buy what's cheap then work out what to do with it. So my shopping list reads: any bargains available, full stop! We could share what we've found super-cheap lately and proffer ideas…

Instead of taleggio cheese?
I've picked up some cheap portobello mushrooms and was going to cook them in a Jamie Oliver recipe with tomato sauce - the recipe uses talegio (sp?) which I don't have and can't get. Any good ideas for a substitute? I was thinking of getting a ball of value mozarella and mixing with some cheddar.

sooooop
This weekend I'm running a homeless awareness camp which involves scouts 'camping' in an unheated hall in cardboard boxes. I'm running a soup kitchen in the evening for food and a fire in the evening where they can rest their aching bones. Any ideas for a good soup they'd be likely to find in a soup kitchen? I have plenty…
