Free Food
What are the foods that you can get for free (not grow your own)? This is my list: Blackberries from hedgerows - (used for pies and jams). Field mushrooms - some are the size of dinner plates and can be preserved to use in winter casseroles! Forest fungi (you need a good book to identify them, use the library). I go to…

Cheap pets
Chickens! Even Madonna, Jeremy Clarkson and a host of other celebs have them, and they are becoming increasingly popular, even among city dwellers with little space. I personally have three (large) hens (in Bristol), and the hens are very quiet (only boys crow) and don't need a cockeral to lay eggs. They can be confined to…

Icky sheets - what to do?
DH has got his eczema under reasonable control by smearing himself liberally with Emulsifying Ointment on some bits and Doublebase on others before coming to bed. As you can imagine, this leaves a glossy film on the sheets after a while. I've bought Terracotta sheets, 100% cotton, because then bloodstains are less of a…

Afternoon all, I have finally got round to clearing out after having a house guest with exotic tastes and have come across a bag of out of date (BB May 05) Sushi rice. Silly Q no 2 - How long to cook a pie for?
Following on from my 'How to cook an omelette' thread! Yesterday I bought a lamb and mint pie from a farm shop, the pastry on the top is already cooked. There are no instructions with it so I was wondering whether anyone had an idea as to how long I should cook it for and at what temperature. I will also be attempting home…

Making it (or buying it) old style
This will be no surprise to many, but apparantly the statistics for bread in Europe are: (Craft being traiditional bakery bread, non craft being factory made, often by the Chorleywood Process - for more information see http://www.fraw.org.uk/pubs/frb/frb-04_01.pdf it's pdf, so you will need adobe acrobat reader or similar.…
