When money saving goes wrong…or how to clean my bag
I made a big pan of soup earlier in the week and portioned it up into Asda smart price equivalent of tupperware and put it in the fridge. I would normally put it in the freezer but, being the money saving gal I am, both freezers were already FULL with half a lamb, half a pig and home made frozen dinners, etc. When getting…

Leftover porridge!
Yesterday I made too much porridge for breakfast, and rather than throwing it away, put it to one side. In the evening I decided to try out a new receipe using mincemeat (savory) - Bobotie - a south african spicey, fruity dish, and I added it in. It was delicious, and it's got me thinking about other ways to use up…

Find this cake!
Hello I'm looking for a recipe for a cake I don't know the name of! As a child my neighbour made lovely tray bakes with dates in them. They were similar in size and colour to tiffin. I know the definitely had dates in them, and i guess from the consistency, perhaps some condensed milk too. They were so yummy - I would love…

Learning to Knit
Now that the winter nights are drawing in I've decided to learn to knit. My first attempts are bound to be an utter disaster so I want to be as OS as possible. I'm going to borrow some needles and steal some leftover wool from someone who used to knit many moons ago. I also want to find a free pattern for a scarf or…

Question about slow cookers
I've read a lot about slow cookers and have taken the plunge and finally bought myself one (£11.49 - half price in Argos at the moment!) I've used it twice and made two very nice meals but just want to know, do they use a lot of electricity? I'm using mine every day on a low setting for 8 hours. I don't want to get a shock…

'Desperate Housekeeping'
Has anyone else read the articles in yesterday and today's Times 2 supplement? 'How to Run Your Home Without Help', a 1940s housekeeping manual, has just been re-published and has been selling like hot cakes. The Times challenged one of their journalists to follow the book's methods for a week. Modern labour-saving devices…

Ancient Egyptian Sugaring Recipe
Well this is probably about as old style as it gets...apparently the Ancient Egyptians liked to be hair free all over so this thread isn't just for the ladies  Most people actually find sugaring less painful than waxing and this recipe is very cheap to make! Here are the details if you'd like to have a go.…

Leeks and Wensleydale Cheese
I picked up a large packet of trimmed leeks for a silly discount price (20p) in the supermarket last night. I could just eat boiled leek all week (and next week too) but I thought it might be interesting to have a go at something different. I'm thinking that leeks go well with cheese - there's a chunk of wensleydale in the…
