Shepherds Pie in SC

Options
I want to make a shepherds pie tomorrow but I also need to pick someone up from the train station just before we eat. So I was wondering if it was possible to make one in the slow cooker with all the potatos and everything so all you have to do is dish it up when we get in?

  • Hmm, I can't see this one working in a slow cooker, but I usually make shepherds pie a day in advance, dish it out into individual portions and warm them in the microwave as needed - if you make enough you can of course pop some in the freezer for another day ;)

I've decided just to book the meat part in the slow cooker and cook the potatos when they get here.

If you sliced the potatoes quite thinly and lay them on top of the meat mixture in the sc, with a bit of gravy over to stop them drying out, I'm sure that would be near as dammit to a traditional shepherds pie.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

If you put a pyrex dish in the middle of the mince mixture with very small pieces of potato in a little boiling water - then that might work.

  • Have a look in the mega index at the slowcooker websites. You might be able to get some clarification on there. I know you can make lasagne ina slowcooker, though I haven't tried it, so I see no reason as to why you shouldn't be able to do a shepherds pie.

I've seen many recipes for SC things like Hot Pot or Irish Stew that are topped with potato, they all work fine.

Slice pots thinly or top with previously made mash with grated cheese and sliced tomato on top, brown under the grill just before serving. At a push you could even use instant mash.

    Instant mash?

Im in the process now of making some mashed potato which I am going to spread on top of the mixture which is simmering away in the slow cooker. We have to pick the people up from the train station at 5.20pm so it will be in the SC roughly 45 mins before we eat. I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks for all the advice :D

I'd be really interested in how it turns out as my lot love shepherds pie and I would love to be able to make it in the slow cooker. I spend most afternoons as a taxi driver for my children and usually put a pre-prepared shepherds pie into the oven on a timer.........it would be so much easier to do it in the slow cooker.

I'm probably a bit late for this now, but what I would have done is to make the shepherds pie as usual before you go to the station - cook mince/veggies, put in dish and top with mashed spuds - then pop it into the oven when you get back for 20-30mins to heat through and brown off.

Whilst it's finishing off it gives you all time to wash/change/warm up a bit and pour a glass of something nice ;)

I'll be interested to hear how it goes in the slowcooker though!
